SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 247,688, dated September 27, 1881, Application filed July 16,1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WEsLEY ROBERTS, of Martinsville, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Baby-Jumper and Table Combined, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention as it appears when the parts are unfolded and the platform placed for use as a baby-jumper. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken at the line a: as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 32 y of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partlyin sec-' tion, showing the parts folded for use as a table, the leaves being down.

The frame or body of this device is composed of the upright end boards, A A, the side bottom pieces, B B, and the upper cross-bar, (3. To the top of the upright A, and between the upward extensions-a 0 thereof, is hinged the lower end of the spring-pole G. This pole is preferably of hickory or similar strong and elastic wood, and is made in two parts, 9 g, which are hinged at g, and these parts are of a length about equal to the length of the crossbar 0, so that when the pole is folded the parts 9 y will fit between the uprights A A and rest upon the said cross-piece, as shown in Fig. 4.

I To the top of the upright A is hinged the folding support F, which is bifurcated, as shown in Fig. 3, and between the parts ff is placed the coiled spring H, upon which the spring-pole G rests when the parts of the device are unfolded for use as a swing or jumper. This support F is also of a length about equal to the length of the cross-piece C, and is adapted tor-be folded down and rest upon the spring pole G.

The side pieces, B B, of the frame are grooved or guttered out upon the inside, as shown at b b, and in these grooves or channels the extension J is placed. This extension is providover and upon the whole device when it is folded up and to serve as a table, as shown in Fig. 4.

When the platform is placed upon the floor for'the baby to jump upon, the rear end of it is placed upon the extensions 1 land under the cleat Z, all of which are secured to'the outside of the upright A, and the leaves T T are supported upon the floor and made firm and steady by the legs or leaf-supports k k, hinged to the center part of the platform; and in order to render the frame and whole device secure and firm, I hinge to the sides of the uprightA the side wings or supports, K K, which should be swung out, as shown in Fig. 3, when the device is used for jumping.

The under side of the platform, near the center, is provided with the projection h, which, when the platform is used as a table, fits between the parts f f of the folding support F, and serves to hold the platform in place.

The under side of the part 9 of the springpole is recessed, as shown at c, for the reception of the upper end of the coiled spring H, and this recess should be lined with tin or similar material, to prevent rapid wearing of the parts.

The child may be held in the swing by any suitable and safe means. The means I prefer to employ are shown clearly in Fig. 2, which consists, mainly, of cords or strips of cloth d d, of suitable length to be tied to the upper end of the pole and around the body of the child, so as to suspend the child in such a position that it can just touch its toes to the platform, the cords or strips of cloth being kept away from the childs face and head by means of the ring 0, which is tied to the cords or strips d d a short distance above the childs head, as

shown. By this device a child may amuse itself by jumping, whirling around, swinging, or sitting still, for hours together, thus relieving its mother of the care of the child, and the child being once placed in the swing, the mother may always be sure of the safety of the child, and that it is not doing mischief, as the child cannot leave the platform of its own accord.

When the device is not used for am using the child it is folded, as shown in Fig. 4, and thus serves as a table.
