COM BINATION-CHAlR-FOR CHILDREN.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 606,654, dated July ;5, 1898. Application filed January 21, 1898. Serial No. 667,468. (No model.)
for Children, of which the following is'a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
i This invention relates to combination-chairs for the use of children, in which are combined various appliances for the convenience, comfort, and pleasure of the child.
The object is to provide in the general form of a wheeled chair a device inwhich are combined several useful and necessary articles.
The invention consists of a combinationchair forchildren, constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a'front view of my improved combination-chair. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, showing it converted into a crib. Fig. 4 is a side view of the chair, showing it converted into a high chair; and Fig. 5 is an under side view of the bottom of the chair, showing the spring locking device.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the chair portion of my improved combinationchair, and D is the wheeled support upon which the chair portion is secured.
The chair portion Amay be constructed of wood, wicker-work, or of any other suitable material and ornamented in any desired manner. The shape or form given to the chair portion is also purely'a matter of preference, the desired result to be a comfortable and convenient chair.
The seat portion of the chair is provided B is provided with a base-frame I), having bevpbar e.
eled side edges 1), which are adapted to engage the undercut sides a of the chair portion. The extensible portion B is provided with side rails and a hinged end portion 11 which is adapted to be fastened in its closed position.
An opening b is formed in the seat portion of the chair, which is intended for toilet purposes. A suitable cover 5 is hinged to the frame I) of the extensible portion B and is adapted to conceal said openings.
The support D is constructed of an open frame at, suitably braced, from the rear por tion of which extend the usual upwardlycurved guiding-handles.
To the under side of the rear portion of the frame d are secured curved springs, which are attached at the lower ends'to an axle provided with two wheels, as is usual in devices of this character. The forward portion of the frame (1 is provided with two downwardlydepending supports, which may be suitably braced, and upon the lower ends of which are two small wheels, forming the running-gear of the chair. Upon each of the four corners of the frame 01 extends a vertical rod 01, which are adapted to be sleeved within the four corner-posts d of the chair portion, which are formed tubular for that purpose.
Upon the under side of the seat portion A is arranged a locking device E, constructed of two side bars 6, connected by a transverse From the center of the transverse bar ef extends a handle-bar e by which the locking device is operated. Each end of the side bar 6 is provided with an angularly-bent lug 6 which are adapted to engage perforations arranged in the vertical rods d for the purpose of locking the chair portion in its raised position, as shown in Fig. 4. Suitable guides e are providedfor the side bars and the handle-bar c and a spring 6 is sleeved about the handle-bar 6 which is confined between a flange on said bar and the guides e for the purpose of preventing the accidental unlocking of the device when the chair portion is elevated.
By means of the constructionj ust described is formed the high chair, which may be adjusted to any desired height by reason of the perforations in the rods 01.
Having fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a combination-chair for children, the combination, with a wheeled frame, of a chair portion supported thereon and carrying an extensible portion slidably mounted within said chair portion and carrying at its front end a hinged portion adapted to swing into a vertical position either above or below the plane of the seat of said extensible portion, said chair portion being provided with a 1101- low post at its corners, vertical rods projecting upwardly from the corners of the wheeled frame and adapted to engage the hollow posts of the chair portion, said rods being provided with perforations, and a locking device arranged upon the under side of the chair portion and embodying horizontal rods slidably .mounted and having ends engaging the perforations in said vertical rods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combination-chair for children, the combination with a suitable wheeled frame, of a chair portion supported thereon, a hollow post arranged at each corner of said chair portion, a vertical rod provided with perforations at each corner of the wheeled frame and adapted to engage the said hollow posts, a locking device arranged upon the under side of the chair portion, comprising two side rods, an angular lug arranged on each end of said side rods and adapted to enter perforations of the said vertical rods, a transverse bar connecting the side rods, a handle-bar arranged upon said transverse rod, suitable guides for the said rods and a spring sleeved on the handle-bar adapted to hold the lugs in said perforations, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of January, 1898.
CHARLES JOHN FICIITL.
