COMBINED TRAVELING-CASE AND BABY-CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,432, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed May 9, 1896- $erial No. 590,845. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. KRATZET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Traveling- Case and Baby-Carriage; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined traveling-case and baby-carriage; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a childs carriage wherein the running-gear and propelling-handle maybe so compactly folded within the body or box thereof that it may be conveniently carried from place to place or upon a street or railway car, steamboat, or other vehicle where the ordinary childs carriage could only be taken with great inconvenience to the owner and employees of public carriers, which object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved traveling case and babycarriage, showing the depressed bottom of the body thereof and the handle secured to one end, by means of which said carriage may be carried about when the parts are in their folded position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the carriage, showing the location of the runninggear under the box thereof and the removable handle on one end, by the use of which said carriage may be pushed or drawn along, the opposite end of said body being lowered to a horizontal position to afford a rest for the lower limbs of the occupant. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the carriage-box with the running-gear inclosed therein, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on dotted line 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the letters of reference, A designates the carriage box or body, which is substantially rectangular in form, the bottom B of said box being raised, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Mounted on one end of said box is a suitable han dle of the kind commonly employed, upon valises, satchels, or handbags, which serves as a convenience in lifting and carrying said box or body with the parts inclosed. The exterior of the box A, as well as the top 0 and bottom B,-may be covered with leather, canvas, or other material to give the box the appearance of an 01;- dinary traveling-case.
Mounted on the inside or under face of the cover 0 is the running-gear of the carriage, consisting of the bolsters D D, elliptical springs E E, axles F F, and wheels G G, said axles being strengthened laterally by the tierod F.
Secured to the inner faces of the sides and ends of the box A are the cleats a, which serve as a seat for the top or cover 0 when the Vehicle is in its closed position, as shown in Fig. t.
The end of the box opposite to the one upon which the handle 0 is mounted is provided with a hinge b, by means of which said end may be swung down into the position shown in Fig. 2, said end being supported in a horizontal position by means of the movable brace-rod at.
Y The operation of changing the parts from the position shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4 into the position shown in Fig. 2 is as follows: The case A is set upon one end, as shown in Fig. 1, when the top 0 is removed therefrom and placed within the recess formed by the depressed bottom, when it may be held therein by suitable clasps or catches. (Not shown.)
The foot-board is then lowered to the desired angle and the handle I-I entered into sockets formed in the block I on the end of the carriage-box, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will now be seen that the parts comprising this combined baby-carriage and traveling-case are few and simple. They may be quickly and securely set up so as'to serve. as a vehicle and as readily assembled in a compact relation, as shown in Fig. 4, when it may be conveniently carried about or packed in a small space, and when the exterior of the box, cover, and bottom is covered with leather, canvas, or other desired material it may be made to very closely resemble an ordinary luggage-carrier.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined traveling-case and babycarriage, the body or box, said box having a raised bottom, and the running-gear mounted on the cover thereof, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined traveling-case and babyca-rriage, the combination of the box, the handle secured to one end thereof said box having" a raised bottom, the running-gear 1nounted on the cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a combined traveling-case and baby carriage, the combination of the body, the running-gear secured to the removable cover thereof, the raised bottom in said body form- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 3 5 in presence of two Witnesses.
