Description

HENRY J. ADAMS, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
IMPROVED MODE O'F ATTACHING SASH TO WINDOW-CRDS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,489, dated August22, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY J. ADAMS, ofv
Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Attaching Sash-Cords to Windows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Thenature of my invention consists in providing means for attaching the sash-cord to the window-sash in such a manner that the same may be easily removed and replaced.
To effect this object I construct a mortise in the side of the sash `about an inch and a half in depth at the upper end, and about threeeighths of an inch in width, but decreasing in depth to about a half inch at the lower end thereof, as represented on the drawings by the letter a. Itis usually about three and a half inches in length. All these sizes vary according to the size of the sash. Across this mortise, and near its lower end, I attach a plate of brass or iron, about half an inch in width and of sufficient strength and thickness to sustain the weight andcord by which the window is raised and lowered. I depress this plate about a quarter of an inch in the center, so that the sides of the depressed part shall fit snugly to the sides of the mortise; but at the same timeI leave it at such a distance from the'bottom of the mortise as shall allow room for the hook, hereinafter described, to work freely therein.V This plate `is marked B on the drawings, and is fastened to the sash by screws y or other suitable means. `I attach the sash-` f cord to the plate B by means of auhook, repre` sented on the drawings by the letter O. This 3 double, shall hook firmly around the plate B, l
and the upper end, bent inward at rightangles with the sash, shall form a suitable hold or support for-the sash-cord, to which it is attached y by a hole and knot or other suitable device.
My method of operating my said invention `is as follows: When itis desirable to remove the window for cleaning or other purpose, I swing that side of it to which the cord is attached to the front of the window-casing. I then pull down the cord suiciently for the purpose, crowd the upper end of the hook inward, and the hook is at once released from the plate, and the cord is detached from the sash. V l 1 l What I claim as new, ot' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The hook C, in combination with the plate l B, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
