PURMORT BRADFORD' OF "NEW HAVEN,v CNNCTIGUT, ASSIGNORhTO SARGENT AND COMPANY 'OF THE SAME' PLAGE. i
Letters Patent No. 71,965, dll/fled December 10, 1857.
Menor/so Doon-LATCH.
'.lO ALL WHOM IT MY CONCEBN:
Be it known that I, PURMORT BRADFORD, of NewA Haven, in the county of New Haven, and VState of Connecticut, have invented a new'mprovement in Door-Latches`; and I do herehy declarethe' following, when `taken in connection vwith the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,
accompanying drawings.
clear, and exact description of the' same, and which said drawings constitute part of thisv specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a fron-t view,
Figure 2 au edge View; and in Figures 3 and 4 rear or internal views, to illustrate thc manner of adjustment forv right or 1eft-hand doors.
This inventionl relates to an improvement in the'construction'ot" latches, such as are used for small or cupboard doors, its objectbeing to make the latch adjustable. either for a left or right-hand door, und consists in the construction ofthe latch with-,a hole or notch upon its opposite sides, so that a pivot centrally located in the case, and passedthrough either one ot tho two holes or notches in `the latch, will tix thelatch either for aright or left-hand door, `as the ease may be.
To enable others to construct my improvement, I` will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the Y A is the case or plate, to which ,the latchis attached. B, the latch, is formed as seen in figs. 3 and 4, with a notch or hole, a, upon one side, and 'upon the other, and nearly inA line with the corresponding edge of the latch itself, and so that a pivot or screw-inserted through a central hole, f, in the plate, will pass through or into one of the notches or' holes in the latch-bolt, as seen in figs. 3 and 4.l As` in iig. 3, through 'the notch or hole a for a left-hand door, and reversed as in fig. 4,*so as to pass through the hole or notch b upon the opposite side, for a. right-hand door. I prefer ,to-insert the latch-bolt within the case, as shown in the'drawings, yet it may be upon the outside of the plate, if desired. It" upon'the outside, the bearing of the latch upon the pivot should be bya hole through the latch; but upon the inside, e notch, as shoxn'in the drawings, is all that is required, the lower side of the latch being,` held against the pivot by the rim of the case. For convenience of operation, I tix a. knob, C, to the latch-bolt, and it' within a. case, a. slot through the case must be formed, to permit the raising of the latch, as denoted in red, fig..1. The keeper or catch for this latch may be of anyof the known reversible constructions. y
The plate is secured to the door, one of the screws passing through und forming the pivotf. This is 'thebetter plan ot' attachment yet, if preferred, the pivot may be fixed to or formed upongthe plate, 4and other means used for securngthe plate to the doer.
I do not broadly claim a latch adjustable so as to be adapted to a right or left-hand door; but
What I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The construction of the lateltbolt, with the pivot-bearings aand b upon opposite sides, combined with a` single central pivot upon thc plate, so as to be adjustable for a right or left-hand door,v and the said plate constructed with-a slot through which thc latch is operated, in the manner herein set forth.,
runnou'r BRADFORD.
