Description

- eine faire @anni ffies.
-nvtrnovnn Doos-LATCH.
alle slgthnle aferra tu in these tetta minut mit netting part nf the same.
To ALLWHoM IT MAY coNcnnN:
Be it known thatL'FRANeIs GLYMER,.of Galion, in the county of Crawford, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefnl Improvement in Latcheshfor Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,` and exact description of the same, referenccbeng had to the annexed drawings, making' part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a door with my latch attached.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same; and
Figure 3 an elevation of the inside of the door, showing the mode of attaching thesame.
The same letters are employed in all the figures for the indication of identical parts.
This invention consists in5 attaching to a door a hasp which also' acts as a latch hy means of screw-bolts passing through slots in the door, so arranged that thc height of the latch may be adjusted in case the door should sag from use, by loosening the nntson the bolts and changing the position of the latch, and thus .faste en'ing it by simply tightening the nuts. i i
A is the door, and B the latch, turning upon a pivot at'rbne end, and fastened by a hasp in the jaiub of `the door.l -This form of latch vin common use is very cheap and convenient, but subject to the objection that it cannot be locked. I make the latch with avelot near the end where it projects beyond the door. This -slot passes over the horizontally-placed staple C, which is constructed with ,its sides sloping upwards, and with a notch on each side to receive the latch. The rvidth of the slot inthe latch mustrbe at least equal tothe depth of `the staple. I prefer to bevel the upper edge of the slot so that the latch shall rise more'readily on tbc sloping face of the staple. The latch, when the door'is closed,'may,be secured by a padlock, D. By this arrangement I unite the advantages of the ordinary hasp anddrop-latch. Y
One inconvenience in the use of this class of latches on barndoors'and gother cheap and illy-made doors,
is that the doors soon sag so that the latch will not'operate. l I obviate or provide for this diilculty by thev mode of attaching` the latch; The pivot is passed throgha vertical slot at I, and fastened on theinside by a nut or nut and Washer. In like manner the staple F, supporting the latch near the edge of the door, is formed in two parts, F andF, of which F is the staple proper, and F a plate through vvhich the points of the staple pass. A vertical slot, H, is cut in the door, andthe staple secured by nuts G. These slots 'allow the latch to' be adjusted vertically, as maybe required to accommodate it to the changes in the bevel of .the door.
What I claim as my inventlon, and desir/e` to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The mode of attaching a combined latehand hasp, B, and staple,` I", to doors, by means ot slots I and H,
so as to permit the ladjustment of the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification 1n the presence-of ttvo subscribingfwitnesses.
IItANGIS CLYMER.
