CIGARETTE-ROLLING CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,445, dated March 28, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE SCHMIDT, residing at Stillwater, in the county of Washington and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette- Rolling Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a pocket case for containing tobacco, paper, matches, &c., for the use of cigarette smokers which case shall also be equipped with devices for rolling the cigarette, and to this end it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts of the device which I will now proceed to fully describe with reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central transverse section of the case shown open in full lines and closed in dotted lines and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the case opened.

This device comprises a case stamped from sheet metal and put together with hinges and solder wherever the same is necessary.

A represents the cover or top of the case.

B represents the bottom or under part of the case. The upper half of the case A is made hollow at O and is inclosed by lid D hinged at a to form a receptacle for tobacco.

E is a spring stamped from the same piece of metal with lid D and intended for use as a clasp spring to hold paper for cigarettes.

F is a piece of metal stamped from the spring E and bent forward and downward to form the catch which looks into an indentation G in the edge of the cover and holds the cover D in place when the lid is closed.

At the back of the cover A is an opening closed by a hinged lid H on the out-side of the cover which makes a receptacle 1, in the top of cover A for matches. On the out-side of the bottom B at proper intervals there are two longitudinal openings J, J arranged parallel to each other. Arms K are set in the case as shown and jointed to the cover A, at points 0 o in recesses b b at the ends of the cover. These arms at the other end are attached to a roller L, in such manner that when the case is closed the roller will pass to the front of bottom B as shown in dotted linesin Fig. 1. At the front opening J is fastened at the edge 61 a sheet or cloth of silk M or other. suitable flexible material which passes back through bottom B over roller L and is fastened to the rear of opening J as shown in Fig. 1 at letter e.

To operate this machine it is opened, and the cloth M is depressed into hole J. Then from paper holder Ea piece of paper is taken and placed in opening J on top of the sheet M as shown in full lines at N. The troughlike bend of sheet M is then filled with tobacco. Then upon closing the cover A arms K propel the roller L to front of bottom B giving roller L a motion as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the cigarette is by the forward motion and revolution of the roller rolled along the bottom within the sheet and discharged at opening J complete.

Instead of using a revolving roller L a plain bar or bail might be used in some cases.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. The cover A having compartments 0 and I with lids, and recesses b b at the ends; in combination with the arms K K hinged to the cover and provided at their opposite ends in the body portion. with roller L, and the body or bottom portion B with two parallel openings and a flexible sheet, substantially as shown and described.

2. The cover A for the cigarette case having an indentation or notch G in its outer edge and provided also with a lid D hinged upon the cover at a and having at its freely swinging edge a clasp spring E extending downwardly from the edge alongside the lid to hold the cigarette paper, and having also at its free edge a lip F turned over in the opposite direction from the clasp spring to engage the notch G and fasten the lid substantially as shown and described.
