H, A LIE-DBL. I SAFETY WATCH POCKET.
No. 475,017. Patented May '17, 1892.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFIoE.
HENRY A. LIEDEL, OF HAYIVARDS, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY WATCH-POCKET.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,017, dated May 17, 1892. Application filed September 26, 1891. Serial No. 406,929. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. LIEDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haywards, Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Safety \Vatch-Pockets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of safety devices for watches, the object of which is to prevent the watch from being snatched or surreptitiously removed from the pocket and stolen.
My invention consists in a casing of chainois or other material adapted to be inserted within the pocket of the wearer and to receive the watch, said casing having a spring for frictionally binding and holding the watch in place, as I shall hereinafter f ully describe, and specifically point out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple device for receiving the watch, into which it may be readily slipped and as-readily removed by the owner, but which will prevent it from being forcibly dragged out or even slyly removed by another person.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my safety watch-pocket. spring and the hook and extension, the casing being removed.
A is an open-mouthed approximately U- shaped casing of suitable material, chamoisskin being preferred, as it will better keep the watch clean. WVithin this casing is a U- shaped spring 13, which encircles the interior surface of the bottom and ends of thecasing, and its extremities are outwardly turned to permit a ready entrance of the Watch. This spring is secured to the casing in a suitable manner, the preferable way being to cover it with chamois-skin and sew said covering to the casing.
C is a spring-hook projecting over the top of and down outside of one side of thecasing Fig. 2 is a view of the- A. To stiffen and hold expanded the casing, this hook has an extension 0, which is continued down in a fold or seam or pocket of the casing to the base. Where it may be secured to the spring. In this position it holds the front of the casing stiff and gives a good surface for the slipping in and out of the watch.
The use is as follows: The casing isplaced in the pocket and the hook O is fitted over the edge of the pocket. This holds the device in place and prevents it from being dragged out. The Watch is slipped into the the casing, expanding the extremities of the spring B and fitting Well down into place. The spring frictionally binds it with sufficient pressure to prevent its being snatched out or even removed gently by another person without the knowledge of the owner. It does not, however, prevent the owner from readily inserting and removing it, because practice and the position of his hand give facility to the operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7 An improved safety-pocket for watches, consisting of an approximately U-shaped openmouthed casing of flexible material, a springplate therein having an approximately U shape to fill the interior of the casing and having its upper ends bent outwardly to facilitate the entrance of the Watch, and a spring-hook having a vertical extension passing down along the inner wall of one side of the casing and secured to the base of the spring-plate and having its hook end extending over the upper edge of the casing, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY A. LIE DEL.
