SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,401, dated March 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NANCY MALINDA HAE- RISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Rug or Carpet Pin, of which Ythe following is a specication.

This invention relates to rug or carpet pins also adapted for other uses, and consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth adapted for securing rugs and carpets in place and which may be also employed for fastening tags or other papers the parts thereof being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable and easily and readily manufactured and sold at a small expense.

Similar numerals 0f reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the shank or supporting bar of the pin having an eye 2, formed intermediate of the length thereof and a pointed angularly positioned engaging end 3. Opposite to the said engaging end the shank l, is formed with coils 4, and from thence continues a long curved securing arm 5, having a pointed end 6, and which is adapted to engage the end 3, of the said shank. The arm 5 is lengthened as shown and set forth, for the purpose of making it easily applied and to adapt the same to be passed through a considerable thickness of material. It will be understood of the room.

lVhen the device is employed for securing rugs as shown the parts thereof are so arranged that they will not become crushed or bent out of shape if stepped upon or if a weight be brought to bear thereon, and as an additional feature of assistance in keeping the device in position, the pointed end 3, is brought prominently into play and is pressed inward into the rug or carpet and thereby holds the said end down and sustains the arm 5, in engagement therewith against accidental displacement.

The device may be constructed of suitable wire of sufficient stiffness or resilient rigidity to adapt the same for the several uses set forth and it will be observed that only one piece of Wire is necessary and is used in the construction thereof.

Many advantages will appear from timeto time to those employing the device other than those hereinbefore enumerated.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as newv is- As an improved article of manufacture, a pin of the character described, consisting of a straight shank or supporting bar having an angularly bent free end to form a keeper with a terminating sharpened point to engage the material to which the pin is applied, and an arm of curved formation bent backward over said shank or bar and adapted to engage the said keeper, the said arm being longer than the said shank or bar and having the end thereof pointed to engage the material to which the pin is applied, substantially as described.
