To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSE GARCIA BADIA, a subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washtubs, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to wash tubs and other vessels adapted and arranged to contain water or other liquid for purposes of cleansing or coloring garments or for like uses, and also provided with adetachable partition whereby the tub maybe made larger or smallerat will in order that it may be adapted for use as a bath tub if desired.

The invention has forits object the provision of a device simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, easily and quickly manipulated and which is efficient in practical use.

To attain the desired end my inven tion consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings which form a part of this specification Figure 1, represents a transverse section of my wash tub and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 00. 00. Fig. 1.

Like letters of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Referring again to the drawings A, represents a vessel in the present instance consisting of the ordinary wooden or soapstone tub, used for Washing clothes, &c. I provide this chamber with a projectingledge, jog, or ridge whereby a shoulder may be formed preferably by bolting, cementing or otherwise rigidly securing in a watertight relation a strip 0, which is placed along the interior sides and bottom of the tub and which is provided with a flange 0, extending forward into the tub in a direction ordinarily at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the tub. A partition B, made of any suitable material and adapted and arranged to loosely fit within the tub so as to be readily removable at will, is provided along the sides near the edges with bolts F, extending through the same, the heads of the bolts being provided with elastic or flexible washers F and the shank being threaded and carrying on the opposite sides of the partition B, a manually adjustable nut F Upon the bolt shank is also placed a clamp plate E. Upon the partition B, being applied to the ledge C,which may consist of a shoulder formed by one portion of the tub being made somewhat larger in Width and depth than the other,-it is placed snugly against the said ledge, and a layer of elastic or flexible material adapted and arranged to form a packing D, having been laid in the joint thus formed. This packing D, may be attached to the partition, or secured to the ledge, or both, or else may consist of a loose independent layer not permanently fastened to either of them.

The parts being placed in position as and in the manner hereinbefore set forth, the nuts F are then tightened causing the clamp plates E to grasp the projecting flange O, and, on account of the tight grip thus obtained, the partition 13, becomes rigidly secured to the tub A, in a watertight relation. The flange C, projects outward as stated asufticient distance to engage with the clamp plates and ordinarily extends the entire length of the ledge 0, although if preferred it may be located only at the points adjacent to the bolts F, of which there may be a greater or less number used, according to the size of the tub in which the partition is to be located.

It will be observed that by my device the partition loosely fits the tub in order to allow for the swelling and shrinkage of the same, a tight joint being insured by the packing located between the sides of the same and the flange of the tub. I have found it necessary in making a watertight partition to thus allow for this shrinkage and swelling, as, in the constructions hitherto used, in cases where after water has been used in the tub, it be comes difficult, if not impossible, to remove the same; whereas if the partitionis made so as to fit the tub tightly only when the parts are wet, the said partition will upon becoming dry be so loose that the same will leak and be inoperative upon the tub being filled with water again. These difficulties I have avoided by the construction of parts hereinbefore set forth.

As it is evident that many slight changes the partition fits tight, it has been found that in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described but that I reserve the right to make such changes and that What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A wash tub A, provided with a ledge 0', located on the inner sides and bottom thereof, in combination with a partition B, the side edges whereof are adapted and arranged to loosely fit and to be engaged with the said ledge C; and with an intermediate packing D; of the clamping devices consisting of the bolts F, Washers F, adjustable nut F and clamp plate E, whereby the partition, packing and ledge may be rigidly held together in a side bearing relation-the tight joint thus made being maintained whether the partition sh rinks or swells-and whereby the parts may also be disengaged at will.
