WILLIAM B. THOMSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GEM FIBRE PACKAGE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,562, dated March 15, 1898.
Application led September 23, 1896. Serial No. 606,697. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM B. THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes or Packages; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object an improved box or package of novel and superior construction and utility; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in vertical section of a box with its lower flanges projecting downward into position ready to be rolled to secure the end and body of the box together. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the flanges rolled together into permanent position to secure the end and body of the box together and showing an additional locking-piece engaged in place. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view analogous to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a partial vertical section showing a modification with a strengthening-head in place.
My invention is especially adapted for the construction of boxes from paper or paperboard; but I would have it understood that I do not limit myself solely to any particular e extending downward below the end B and the extremity a being preferably longer than the extremity b. The part b of the end may be in the nature of a flange turned at right angles to the body of the head, the head being set up within the body a sufficient distance to allow the extremity ct of the body to project beyond the body of the head a distance equal to or greater than the length of the flange b. Vhen the head has thus been located within the body, as above described and as more particularly indicated in Fig. l, the two extremities ct b are placed in a suitable machine or die and rolled over and inward together on a curve and in under the head B to securely lock the head and body together. By rolling the extremities d and b over and inward thus and in under the head I am enabled to secure superior strength of joint, especially desirable and eifective in a box made of paper or fibrous material, as well as a tight and compact joint. This rolled joint is found to secure -a special stiffness greater than can be secured in any ordinary manner. By making the extremity a longer than the fiange of the head B, I am also enabled to roll the edge of thc extremity a over and above the edge of the iiange b, as indicated, so as to catch and hold the flange b rmly and securely.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown, in addition to the parts above described, a fastening piece or plate C, secured on the outside of said head orend piece Bin any suitable Inanner, as by cement, the periphery of the fastening-'piece C projecting snugly up against the inner surface of the roll above described and downward thereagainst, said roll being indicated at Q and forming in the completed article a projecting rim. The fastening-piece C being secured thus snugly against the inner surface of said roll or rim and to the outer surface of the end piece B stiffens the construction of the box very materially and holds the roll or rim firmly in its rolled position. For a smaller and lighter box my invention contemplates dispensing with the fasteningpiece C; but for larger and heavier boxes I prefer to use said fastening orlocking piece C.
For still larger boxes requiring more strength my invention contemplates engaging in under the head B a strengthening-head D, fitted in under the head B within the flange 1J before the roll or rim is formed, the periphery of the strengthening-head D fitting snugly against the inner circumference of the flange b. The extremities a and b are then rolled, as above described, in under said head D, as
shown in Fig. 5, with or without the piece C, said piece being preferably employed, the head D being located. between the partsB and C, as shown. This strengthening-head may be made of Wood or any other desired material. It will be firmly held in place by the roll or rim Q. By its'use I get greater strength and stiffness at the bottom of the box or package, and when located between the parts Bv,A and C the head D is not exposed to the weather or to dampness, but is thoroughly covered and protected, so that all liability of contraction.. and expansion thereof is entirely avoided. The body A may be made of Vpa'} er-looard orV other fibrous material rolled and. lapped at its edges, as indicated, into tubular or other form. This construction and arrangement .of fthe head and the manner of holding it securely in place answers, obviously, for either the bot-` tom of a box or package or for the formation of a cover B' therefor, the cover being formed in a manner analogous to that already described.
When the box or package is completed, my invention contemplates, if desired,.the application of a `waterproof coating thereto.
A box so constructed is of the greatest possiblestrength, the joint of the end piece with the body being absolutely tight as wellas strong and irrn, said roll or joint being in the nature Lof a compound roll or curve owing .to the tubular form of the rim in cross-section and its curved outline or contour about ythe end of the package.
What I claim as my invention isl. A box of fibrous material constructed of anend piece havinga downwardly-projecting flange at the edge thereof, a body projecting downwardly about and adjacent to the i-ange of-said end piece, said han ge .and theadjacent extremity of the body both rolled inwardly together inthe form of a curve in cross-section making an inwardly-turned tubular roll or joint to .unite said end piece and body together, and in combination therewith, a fastenerplate of fibrous material rigidly engaged against the surface of said inwardly-turned roll or joint, and upon the adjacent outer surface of said end piece to form a permanent lock to prevent the unrolling of said joint, the periphery of the fastening-plate projecting snugly up against the inner surface of the roll, substantially as and for lthe purpose described.
2. A box or package of fibrous material constructed of an end` piece having a peripheral downwardly-proj ectin g lian ge,a body projecting about the flangeof said end piece, an additional fastener of fibrous material, said lian ge and the `adjacent extremity of the body both rolled inwardly together in the form of a curve in cross-section, making an inwardly-turned tubular roll or joint to ixedly and immovably unit-e said end piece `and body, the edge of said fastener permanently engaged snugly against the inner surface of said joint and against the adjacent outer surface of the end piece to form a lock to prevent the .unrolling of said joint, and a strengthening-head located between the fast-ener and vsaid end piece, the periphery of said strengthening -head engaged between said tubular rolland said end piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
'In testimony whereof I sign this speciication in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. THOMSON.
