TRUNK CORNER. No. 373,232. Patented Nov. 15, 1887;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANoIsco GARCIA, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRUNK-CDRNER.
a: SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,232, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed September 3, 1887. Serial No. 248,696. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCISCO GARCIA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk-Corners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
My invention relates to an improvement in trunk-corners, and has for its object to provide a device adapted for attachment to the corners of a trunk, which will be more or less elastic, wherein, when a trunk is thrown upon a protected corner, thecontents will not receive a severe shock.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is .a perspective view of a trunk having my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is plan view of the'attachment. Fig. 3 is asection on line 00 ref, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4'isa transverse section through a modified form.
In carrying. out the invention a base-plate, A, is provided, triangular in shape, having a smooth inclined out-er face, a, a central triangular recess, b,and a series of apertures adapted to receive screws.
Within the recess b a pyramidal cap, D, is inserted, adapted to project outward therefrom, provided at the base with a flange, d, which flange, coming in contact with the inner surface of the base-plate A, limits the outward movement of the cap, yet admitting of a movement inward, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Prior to attaching the device to the corners of the trunk, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the cap D is entered from the inside of the base-plate A into the recess 1), the apex extending out beyond the plate A. A rubber block, E, is now placed within the cap, being of a contour to snugly fit the same, and provided with angular recess, e, adapted to receive the corner of a trunk.
After the rubber has been brought into engagement with the trunk-corners, the baseplate A is securely screwed to the sides of'the v trunk adjacent to the corners, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
If found more desirable, the form of corner shown in Fig. 4 may be used. In this event an aperture, f, is made in the corner of the trunk, the device being constructed of a triangular or pyramidal plate,'F, having an inwardly-flanged base, f, and a threaded rod, F, integral with the inner side centrally the top, which rod passes th rough an elastic block, E, and also through the aperture f in the trunk, the end of the rod within "the trunk being provided with a nut, h, which not and rod are adapted to have play within a corner compartment, H, formed in the trunk.
It will be observed that in both forms of corner-irons an elastic block is made to intervene the iron and the trunk, and that an allowance is made for the expansion and contraction of the block.
From the foregoing description, read in connection with the drawings, the operation of the device will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A corner-iron for trunks and similar boxes, consisting of a triangular base plate, adapted for attachment to the trunk, provided with a central triangular recess, a triangular pyramidal cap fitted in said recess, and an elastic block within the cap fitted to the contour thereof, and also the contour of the corner over which the base is adapted to be secured, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. I
2. The combination, with a trunk and a triangular base-plate secured at and over the corners, provided with a central and triangular recess, of a triangular pyramidal cap fitted in the recess of the base, having play therein and'extending beyond said base-plate, and an elastic block held between the trunk and cap, conforming to the inner contour of the cap and the outer corners of the trunk, substantially as'and for the purpose herein set forth.
FRANCISCO GARCIA.
