SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,172, dated February 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMET L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan,have invented certain new and useful I1n provernents in Corsets, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in corsets and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and definitely pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the inside of a corset, showing my invention applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section through one of the breast sections. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 2.

Aand B are the two corset sections, of usual design except the construction of the breast section.

0 is the outer covering of the breast section suitably gathered or fulled.

D are drawing strings extending across the inner face of this covering, in a suitable guideway formed within the strip E, terminating at the edge of the corset section inside the corset, one of the strings passing through a stationary loop F.

G is an interior lining for the breast section sewed only at its edges forming within a pocket H, the mouth of which is formed at the edge of the corset section.

The parts being thus constructed the wearer in using suitable padding, draws it into a compact and symmetrical shape by drawing up the drawing strings, which when tied inside, are hidden from view overcoming the objection which arises from the use of such strings on the outside.

' I find that I can produce a result with this construction, in a compact, and symmetrical exterior, which I have not been-able to produce by any other construction.

What I claim as my invention is In a corset, the combination with the breast section, of an interior lining therefor, separated therefrom forming a pocket with an opening at the edge of the corset section, drawing strings arranged across the interior of the breast section and a loop at the edge of the corset section through which one of the strings passes, and about which the ends are adapted to be tied, substantially as described.
