Description

tempered wire which is disposed throughout UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY H. TAYLOR, Y OF BRIDGEPOR'IH CONNECTICUT.
sTlFl-'ENlNG-BAND.
SPECIFICATION arming part of Letfrs'ratent Nonroaeaa, dated July 1, 1902. l Application iiled April 17,1902. Serial No. 103,390. (No model.)`
To @ZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H..TAYLoR,a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stiffening Bands; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe inven-'jl tion, such as will enable others skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain newvan'd useful improvements in stiffening-bands such as are commonly used for dress-collars and the like, and has for its object to provide a band of this description which shallbe exceedingly simple and light, .but at the same time possessing a proper degree of stiffness, such as would notk be likely to annoy thel wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure l is an elevation illustrating .the particular construction of stiffening element which I employ; Fig. 2, an elevation illustrating my completed stiening-band, and Fig. 3 an elevation showing a modified form of stiffening.-
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 is the stiffening element of my improvement, made from a single piece of fine wellits length in zigzag fashion, so as to present at the top and bottom alternate loops 2 and openings 3. This stiifener is bound to a cloth facing 4 by means of upper and lower tapes 5 6, respectively, and end tapes 7 8, as shown at Fig. 2, so that it will be clear that the stiening is aiforded by the closed loops 2, uniformly distributed at the top and bottom,
while the openings 3, which are likewise uni'- f ormly distributedaord a uniform flexibility 'throughout the length of the band.
The stiffening element maybe disposed as is shown at Fig. 3, where I have shown a wire 9, crossed alternately at the top and bottom, Y 4so as to provide closed loops 10 and intermeandbottom of the stiffener.
The cloth facing I merely provides a sort of lining, so that the stiffening element will not come into actual contact with the person of the wearer, and I therefore do not wish to be limited in this respect, since the facing may be omitted and the stiffening element held-in shape by means of the tapes above and below and at the ends.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf l. A stiffening-band comprising a wire disposed in zigzag fashion to form alternate loops and openings at the top and bottom, said band being -bound with tapes along the top and 'bottom and at the ends, substantially as set forth.
2. A stiffening-band comprising a Wire dis posed in zigzag fashion to forni alternate loops and openings at the top and bottom, and a cloth facing secured to said band by tapes, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
HENRY H. TAYLOR.
