Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49.120, dated August 1, 1865.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Beit known that I FRANCIS KELLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sofa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art"to make and use the sa1ne,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificaton, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my invention folded or adjusted as a sofa; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ot' the same, also shown folded or adjusted as a sofa, taken in the line :v x, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transversevertical section of the same, taken in the same line as Fig. 2, but theparts shown in an unfolded state or adjusted as a bedstead.

This invention relates to a new and improved sofa-bedstead and it consists in apeculiarconstruction ot' the same, or in an improved arrangement of its parts, whereby a better bed is obtained than usual in such devices and a more convenient and desirable article ot' the kind obtained, as hereinafter set l'orth.

rIhe base or lower part, A, of the device is a rectangular box, the lid a of which is secured to it by hinges b, and is upholstered, as usual, to

form the seat. The base A may contain a mattress, B, and necessary bed-clothing.

C represents the back of the sofa, the lower edge of which is` secured to the rear of the seat or lid a by means of hinges c, the inner side ot' the back being upholstered, as usual, as

To the rear `ot' the base or box A there are attached h'y hingesf two` aps, E E, which,l

when the device is used as a'sofa-,ifit snugly against the rear ot' A, so that the back of the sofa may be `near oragainst the wall of an apartment, it' desired. (See Fig. 2.)

In order to convert the device into a bedstend, it is drawn out from the wall to any con-` venient or desired dista-nce, the flaps E` E turned ont at right angles with the rear of the l base A, the back C turned down by disengaging the hooks ee from it, so as to `rest upon the flaps E E, and the mattress D laid npon the seat and back, as shown in Fig. 3.

By this arrangement it will he seenthat the mattress is laid upon two upholstered surfaces, and consequently au easy and agreeable bed is obtained.
