Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STOUGHTON B. HOLDEN, OF WOBURN, .MASSACHUSETTS ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND L. L. HOLDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED COMBINED VALISE AND SEAT.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 16.187, dated January 31, 1865.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S'roUGH'roN B. HOL- DEN, of Woburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combination of a Valise and Seat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, cle-ar, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is an end view of my invention in a folded state, a portion being broken away in order to show the interior; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same in an open state, taken in the line x Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the same in an open state; Fig. 4, a section of a portion ot' the valise, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved combination of a valise and seat, whereby the valise, when unfolded, may be converted into a seat, with abundant room to receive or hold different tools or articles required for use by mechanics, artists, fishermen, Src., and the valise, when folded, capable of containingv necessary clothing besides the tools or articles above specified.
A represents a valise of two equal parts, a. a', ot' rectangular oblong form, and connected at one end by hinges b, so that the two parts may be opened and adjusted in line with each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. One part, a, of the valise is provided with a bottom, B, composed of leather, c, stretched over a rectangular frame, d, which is hinged one end to the outer end of a, as shown at c. This bottom B thus constructed forms an easy seat, and is about as economical a mode of construction as can be devised. I do not, however, conne myself to any particular manner of construction-an upholstered seat or cushion would answer, but it would be more eX- pensive, and of greater weight. The interior of the part a may be used as a receptacle for ior clothing. The outer part, a, of the valise is provided with an internal lid, O. hinged at one side, as shown at f. The interior of the part a may contain tools or implements of any kind which the owner or user of the device may require.
The outer side of the part a of the device has a hole made in it near each corner, and similar holes are made near the outer corners of a. These holes, when the device is folded, are filled with plugs h, which may be of cork, provided with metal ends, the plugs preventing the holes from becoming iilled with dirt and trash.
The device, when used as a seat, is provided with six legs, D, which are inserted in the holes, and, in order to render the legs firm in position, blocks t' are secured within the corners ofthe two parts a a', with holes in them to receive the legs. When the device is folded up and used as a valise, the legs may be replaced within the part a.
Thus by this simple arrangement I obtain a combination of a valise and seat, which will be extremely useful for eXcursionists, traifely ing mechanics, artists, fishermen, etc., as all necessary clothing for the user of the device may be carried in it as well as necessary tools or implements.
The device need not exceed, when folded, sixteen inches in length, twelve inches in Width, and six or seven inches' in depth or thickness, which dimensions will not exceed those of an ordinary valise.
l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a combined valise and seat, composed of two -parts, a a', connected by hinges b, one part, a,
being provided with a bottom or seat, B, and the other part with an internal lid, C, and both parts supported by legs D when the device is used as a seat, the legs being removable, and all constructed and arranged as herein described.
