NECKSCARF.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUSTE BERTIN, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stiff-Bodied Cravats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has been patented in Italy, No. 32,108, dated June 17, 1892; in Spain, No. 13,460, dated June 17, 1892; in Lnxemburg, No. 1,643, dated June 17, 1892; in Belgium, No. 100,165, dated June 18, 1892, and in England, No. 11,467, dated June 20, 1892.

This invention has for its object to provide a body for stifi-bodied cravats and scarfs which will allow the removal of the covering fabric and the substitution of another instantly without any knowledge of the art of cutting and making such articles.

To this end the said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the cravat-body made according to my invention; Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same with the fastening flaps attached; Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of the same, the fastening plate,

being shown in dotted lines; Fig. lrepresents a detail view of the upper front fastening flap; Fig. 5 represents a similar view of the fastening plate or shield; Fig. 6 represents a similar view of the other fastening flap; and Fig.

7 represents a similar view of the two halves of the neck-band.

The body of my improved cravat or scarf is made of pasteboard, having an outline of five sides A B G D E, and bent into a slightly convex form as shown. To this body two pasteboard cloth-covered fastening flaps a and b are connected by hinge-joints c and d of cloth, the former flap being attached to the lower part of the rear of the said body and the latter part to the upper part of the front of the said body. makes that part of the body softer as well as more'convex. In the upper part of the rear of this body are formed two socketstt, which may be spring-sockets or screw-threaded, and receive two studs having large-headed plates serving to fasten the covering fabric of the cravat and also the neck-band. The said body is also provided with a third holet the use of which will be hereinafter described.

The fastening plate M is approximately of shield form and is constructed of thin pasteboard. Its upper end has for boundary a slightly curved line. This plate is pierced with three holes corresponding in position to the sockets t t and the hole t of the said body. The two upper holes are designatedt and the lower hole is designated 6 At the upper end of the said plate there is a little steel catchX intended to receive the collar-' button. For this I may substitute at will some other form of catch not sewed on but fastened by branches of metal.

The neck-band, Fig. 7, is detachable from the said body. It is larger in the middle than elsewhere and of a color corresponding to that of the fabric of the cravat. It is composed of two pieces each consisting of two parts fg or f g. The parts ff, which are nearest the body of the cravat are of similar fabric to the covering thereof. The remaining parts g g are of elastic fabric and provided respectively with a ring or eye 9 and a hook g which engage behind the wearers neck.

To put together the cravat according to my invention. The body aforesaid being placed on a table, with the fastening flap 1) uppermost I take a rectangular band of covering fabric of proper size quality and color and slip it between this flap and the cushion Q, as far as the hinge-joint 0 taking care to leave more material on one side than on the other. I then press the said flap 1) down on this fabric causing the points 19 to penetrate the latter and thus hold the covering fabric in place. I then turn the said body over into the position shown in Fig. 3 and place the said band of material between the flap a and the 'said body as far as the hinge joint 01. I then press down the said flap a and the two pointsp are passed through holes therein into the said fabric. I pass then through the said fabric and the hole 25 a fastening device having two branches the use of which will be indicated later. These operations ended I fold the shorter end or side of the band of fabric, assumed to be the left, on the side AB of the body, afterward the other and larger end or side-the righton the side C D of the body, and the front of the cravat is formed by this crossing. The remainder of the fabricis afterward folded on the rear part of the body on the sides A E D E. I then apply the fastenin g plate or shield M to the back of the cravat with the holes i over the sockets t I introduce a fastening device through the holes 25 and 29 also superposed; and I press down the two branches thereof to hold the plate M in position. I then place behind the fastening plate M the two parts ff ofthe neck-band with their holes it over the holes Ff of the fastening plate and the sockets it of the body. I then introduce the fastening screws into the said holes and sockets and thus secure all.

Instead of pasteboard, other material of proper stiffness may be used for the cravatbody the flaps and the fastening plate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A pasteboard cravat-body provided with a pad Q on the upper part of its front, a hinged flap 1) arranged to cover the said pad and aflap a. hinged to the lower part of the rear of the said body, the front of the said pad being provided with a pointp and the inner face of the flap a being provided with points 19 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the stiff body of a cravat and a fastening plate having holes corresponding to holes or sockets therein a neckband formed in two parts having holes also corresponding to the said holes and sockets and devices for fastening the said body the said locking plate and the said neck-band together substantially as set forth.

3. A stiff cravat-body of five sided form as shown having a pad Q points pand flap b at the front of its upper part and the flap a and points 19 at the rear of its lower part substantially as set forth.
