PHOTOGRAPH-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,059, dated January 17, 1893. Application filed March 18, 1892. $erial No. 425,483. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE FRANKLIN BAM- BRIDGE, cabinet-maker, of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photograph-IIolders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention .relates to a device, which, occupying but a small area, will receive and securely retain in position a large number of photographs or display cards, in a manner convenient forexamination, and in a position mostsuitable for the eye, and which will, in itself, make a neat and attractive article of manufacture,-and the invention consists essentially of a base fitted with any suitable number of holders, so hinged to the said base that each may swing independently of the others, and complete a travel of one hundred degrees, being fifty degrees each side of its perpendicular position; each of these holders being so constructed as to readily receive and securely retain in position one or more photograph or display cards without in any manner injuring or damaging the same, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 2 is an end view of the device illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the base, the holder hinged thereto, the sides, said sides being open, and photographs or display cards held by said holders. Fig. 3 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 showing photograph or display cards retained in position by the holders. Fig. at is a perspective view of the holder itself.

Like numerals and letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.

In the drawings, 1, refers to the base of the device, which is shown to be rectangular in form and provided with a step 2, on the top of which are hinged the holders Each of these holders 3 consists of a middle portion 3 (one at either end of said middle portion 3,

and so formed as to provide a means for retaining in position the photograph or display card.

As shown in the drawingstheholder 3 consists of one continuous piece of wire of suitable gage comprised of a middle portion 3 and at either end thereof an upward extension 3* bent at right angles to the said middle portion 3 These extensions 3 are of a sufficient predetermined length to provide a proper retaining surface for the photograph or display card placed therein and are folded back upon themselves, which fold 3, extends down as far as the top of the middle portion 3 and is then bent upward again parallel with the upward extension 3, which second upward extension 3 is parallel with and adjacent to the upward extension 3 The extension 3 extends upward as far as the top of the upward extension 3, and is then folded back upon itself to prevent the free end thereof from in any manner injuring or damaging the photographs or display cards while being inserted therein or withdrawn therefrom.

The holders 3 are secured to the top of the step 2 by means of staples 4 encircling the middle portion 3 and entering the step 2, said staples being arranged one at either end of said middle portion 3. The photographs or display cards 5 are placed between the upward extensions 3* and 3 and by them are securely held in position. It is possible to conveniently exhibit two photographs or display cards in each holder 3 by placing said photographs or display cards back to back.

It will be noticed by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that when the device is closed the photographs or display cards taper toward a common apex and when opened they take the position illustrated in Fig. 2. It is possible, and is found convenient, before examination to incline all the photographs or display cards in one direction, which direction we will suppose is marked H in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and after examination turn them to incline in the opposite direction, which we will suppose is marked B in the same figure. The side pieces 6 are sohingedto the base indicated in'Figi 2 and allow of the ready examination of the photographs or display cards vent the photographs falling too far when in their downwardly inclined position.

, A deviceof this description'with a base six inches long will contain abou-t'four dozen photographsqor display cards, this number being at least twice the number of photographs or display cards contained in an ordinary album, and the space occupied by said device being much less than an album of a very small size.

Extending across the top of the holders 3 is a locking bar or wire 10 adapted to pass through an opening niediately formed in the photograph card at or near its lower edge for the purpose of preventing the withdrawal or removal of the photograph without the connivance of the owner of the photograph holder, this locking bar being suitably hinged at one end to the base and suitably locked atthe other.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
