UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLOTTER.
y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,823, dated .T anuary 10, 1893.
l Application led July 8,1892. Serial No. 439,312. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MEYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blotters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in blotters and relates particularly to the means for securing together two or more sheets or pieces of material composing the body of the blotter as hereinafter described.
Reference isto be had to the accompanying Y drawings forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents an outside face view of a smooth blotter back having a blotter on its opposite4 side or face and with the fastener applied at opposite ends to unite the two together; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section upon the line 2-2 in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line 3--3 in Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank used to form the fastening which secures the parts of the blotter together; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the finished fastening.
.A, is a glazed or smooth blotter-back designed to carry a removable blotter or strip of blotting paper B, upon its lower or inner face and which is united therewith by a fastening C, applied to opposite ends of the two strips A and B, that when combined give a smooth and restful support to the hand, with little or no friction over the back and without exerting any tendency to double up the blotter and smear the writing, or subject the blotter to being soiled by the hand. To make these and other advantages however, attached to the combined blotter and its back, fully attainable, it is desirable that the two should be held together in a simple, steady and efcient manner, and should present every facility for their separation when itis required to reverse the face of the blotter or to substitute a new blotter for an old and soiled one. This the fasteners C, do. Each of these fasteners is constructed of or from a thin and flat spring metal blank, shown in Fig. 4. and formed with spur-like projections b b, at its one end and with a bifurcated spring tongue or tongues c c at its other end. This blank is made to form a clamp for fixed attachment to the outside of the back A by bending the spurs b b to engage with said back or with re-enforcing pieces CZ, on said back and doubling the blank over upon itself about in line with where the bifurcated tongue or tongues join the body of the clamp, and so that said tongues will project underneath and approximately in parallel relation with said body to clip or clamp, with a spring pressure, the blotter B within them and against the inner face of the back A. The advance ends of these tongues are turned or bent outward, as shown at e, so as not to bear upon the blotter, whereby increased facility is afforded for entering the blotter within or back of the spring tongues. By means of these fastenings C, the blotter Will be securely held from accidentally shifting on the back and yet the blotter is made capable of quick insertion and removal or of having its face reversed Whenrequired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
l. As a new article of manufacture, the within-described blotter fastener, consisting of the spring-metal device having at one end the inwardly-bent spurs, b, for fixed engagement with the upper side of the blotter, and at the other end the long, spring tongues, c, which are bent reversely to said spurs and project underneath the body of the device, but separated from the spurs by a space sufficient to accommodate the detachable portion of the blotter, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the blotter B, and independent smooth back or strip A, arranged upon the outside face ot the blotter, of the spring metal clamps C, C, at the opposite ends of said back and blotter, said clamps being constructed at their one end with spurs b, tixedly engaging with said back or outer strip, and at their other end with a bifurcated spring tongue or tongues c, bent to project underneath the body of each of the clamps, and adapted to hold the blotter with a spring pressure up against the back and to provide for the easy removal of the blotter, substantially as described.
