GEORGE W. PAULUs, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, WISCONSIN.
PENCIL-Homann.
To all 'whom 'it may concern.' v
.Be it known that I, GEORGE PAULUS, a citizen ofthe vUnited States,`and a resident of Grand Rapids, in the county of l/Vood and,v State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which rthe-following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for pencils, although adapted for use Lwith penholders, brushes, erasers, or other articles, and the main obj ectis to provide such holders and means for securing the same in convenient positions for instant use,.as upon the backs of tablets,`upon school blank books, upon memorandum books, note book covers, etc., and in some forms may be used on thelat portions of covers, on desks, on a wall, or in any other convenient and suitable place. y Y
'The holder itself is formed of tin, iron, brass, steel, or other-stiff material and serves to protect the point of a pencil orpen,'as
` Well as for the purpose above stated.
Various methods of securing the holder in place may belemployed, several of such being illustrated, and theV holder may also be made to serve as a lock for the covers of a book. p z
My invention is fully described inthe following specification, of whichV the accompanying drawings form a part, in Ywhich like characters'refer to; like parts in each of the views, and in which 5- Figure 1 is a side view'of a note book,
tablet, or pad, provided with one form of,
my holder, partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged .section taken on the line 2,-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a modied form of holder held upon the flat sur- Y i face of a book, tablet, or` pad,
Fig. 5 is van enlarged section taken on the line 5--5 ofV Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side view of a book the covers of which are held together by another form of holder;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectiontaken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 6, but
showing another form of locking holder; j
and

l kSpecification of Letters Patent. Application Vfiled April-1, 1916-. Y s'eriai-No. easier.
g. 9 is an enlarged section taken on the Patented May 22", 1917'.
In the different forms Villustrated and about to be described, there are two features common to all, the opensided cylindrical member 15 and the bead 16 which serves the dual purpose Vof a means for ysecuring the member 15 in place and of stiffening the de Vvice as a whole;
In the form shown `in Figs. V1 and 2, the sheetmetal or other stiii" material forming they member 15`and bead 16 is'continued to kform aflat member 17 having slots 18'tlierein. InV securing thisvr formk to the back'or cover, whicheverit may be, 19, of a pad, tablet, or book, a strip 20 of paper or fabric is employed, a part thereof being pasted to the surface of the back 19, preferably as shownV at 21 tothe 'rear surface of the said f back, the" strip 20 being-then looped within the bead 16, as shownV at 22, and locked therein by means of a member 23 of wood, wire, twine, etc., after which the strip'20 is cut tov form two tongues 24 which are passed outwardly through the slots 18, the member 25 and tongues 24'bein'g then pasted to the back or-cover' 19, thus holding the pencil holder in place at the edge of the back or cover.' VWith respect to the bead 16 it `will be noted that ina'll forms in which a hard ller-1ne1nber` 23 is used the openV side of the bead is of materially less width than the diameterfof the bead, thereby preventing lateral withdrawal of the strip 20 and said strip and filler longitudinally of the `filler 23, and I may compress the bead at Y desired points to prevent withdrawal of the bead,fthis not requiring illustration as it is merely an eXpedient.
In the form shown' in vFigthe member 17 is not used'nor provided, the edge of the back Vor cover 19 being passed within the bead 16 and locked by the filler 23 against lateral removal. n
The form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is adapted .for use on flat surfaces, whereas the preceding forms were all at the edges of the back or cover 19, this form providing` a supplemental cylindrical member 15a whereby two pencils may be held instead of but one, and this form is held in place by means of a strip 34 looped within the beadf16, and
held therein by means of the ller 23, and then pasted tothe back or cover 19.
The holder shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is iden-v tical with the one shown in Figs. Vlfand 2,
but I form a lock therewith for the covers 19 and 19a by pasting a strip 35 on the cover 19L and extending` well beyond the edge of said cover to form a tongue 36, the portions cut from the ends of said tongue. being bent inwardly of the cover 19a to form holding flaps 37. In this form, upon closing a book, the tongue 36 is passed Within the Cylindrical member 15 and, When the pencil 38 is forced longitudinally through said member 15 With its point foremost, the tongue 36 is locked within said member 15 against removal, this strip 35 and tongue 3G being` of paper or fabric ofI sufficient strength and pliability to serve as stated.
In all of the forms so far described, the bead 16 was formed at the open side of the cylindrical member 15 and served, with the edge of the sheet forming said member 15, to form the opening into said cylindrical member, but in the form shown in Figs. 8 and 9 I form the bead on the opposite side of the metal forming the cylindrical member 15, as shown at 39, Fig. 9, and I lock the edge of the cover 19 Within the bead by meansl of a filler in the manner described with reference to Fig. 3. In this form, the cover 191 has a paper or fabric strip 40 .pasted to both sides thereof and projecting beyond the edge thereof to form a loop 41 adjacent one end of the cylindrical member 15, the pencil 38 passing through both the member 15 and the loop 41 locking the covers 19 and 19a together.
W'hile my invention is designed primarily for use With pads, tablets, and books, I obviously do not limit myself to such uses, the
form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 being particu-4 larly adaptable to any flat surface, such as a desk, a Wall, or any equivalent, but I do intend to employ the cylindrical member 15, bead 18, and filler 23, in all forms, regardless of the exact shape of either, or of the material of which they are composed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a split cylindrical member, adapted to receive a pencil, having a split bead at one of its lateral edges, and means within Said bead for secming said device to a back or cover.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a split cylindrical member, adapted to receive a pencil, having a split bead at one of its lateral edges, and a filler within said bead for securing said device to a back or cover.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a split cylindrical member, adapted to receive a pencil, having a split bead at one of its lateral edges, a flexible strip looped within said bead and pasted to a book or cover, and a liller Within said bead preventing the removal. of said strip.
4. A device of' the class described, comprising a split cylindrical member, adapted to receive a pencil, having a split bead at one of its lateral edges, means Within said bead for securing said device to one cover ol' a book, and means secured to the other cover of said book engaged by said pencil to lock said covers in closed position.
