UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS GREENWALD, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,275, dated December 20,/ 1892. Application filed July 27, 1892- Serial No. 441,394. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis GREENWALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in necktie fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve lthe construction of that class of necktie fasteners which is arranged within the body of a tie, and are operated by external pressure upon the tie.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a rear view of a necktie provided with a fastener constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the necktie fastener detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a necktie fastener secured within the body of a tie 2 and adapted to be operated to release the neck-piece or band 3 of the tie by external pressure upon the latter, and constructed ofa single piece of metal which is bent to form a easing to receive the neck-piece or band 8. The casing consists in the front wall 4, the rear wall 5 and side walls 6 and 7; the rear wall has its lower portion 8 free to form a spring and the lower end thereof is bent inwardly and extends across the lower end of the easing forming a rectangular extension 9. The side 6 is provided with an extension or plate 10 which is arranged beneath the spring portion 8 of the rear side of the casing, and completes the latter, whereby the spring portion 8 is arranged outside of the casing proper. The lower edge of the plate lO is extended beyond the body of the casing, and curved inward slightly to form a jaw l2, and the upper edge y is bent outward and forms a flange or heel 13 upon which the spring portion 8 bears, whereby the strength of the spring is increased as the spring portion 8 is thrown away from the casing. The rectangular extension 9 is provided with an L-shaped jaw 14, and the sides 15 of the rectangular portion are bent fiat against the sides of the casing to guide the spring portion and prevent lateral movement thereof, and to increase the durability and compactness of the fastener. The lower edge of the front of the casing is bent outward at an angle to form a guard 16 t0 enable the spring portion to be compressed without bending or otherwise injuring the rectangular eX- tension thereof. The upper portion of the back of the casing is provided with a slot 17 which receives a tongue 1S of the sides 6, whereby the latter and the back of the casing are secured together. The necktie-fastener is sewed or otherwise secured within the body of the tie, and perforations are provided at the upper edges of the easing to facilitate sewing.
It will be seen that the necktie-fastener is simple and inexpensive, and strong and durable, that the spring is supported and held away from the casing proper, and that the neck-band of the necktie may be securely clamped between the curved jaw and the Jaw which is L-shaped in cross-section.
A necktie fastener constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and consisting of a casing to receive the neckband of a necktie and comprising the front 4 having its lower edge bent outward at right angles to form a guard, the back 5 having its lower portion S free and forming a spring and provided at the lower end thereof with an inwardly proj ecting reetangular extension, said extension having its sides arranged flat against the casing and provided with the jaw 14 L-shaped in cross-section, and thesides 6 and 7, the former provided with a plate 10 arranged beneath the spring portion and completing the casing and having its lower edge extended to form a Jaw and having its upper edge bent outward to form a heel for supporting the spring portion 8, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS GREENWALD. Witnesses:
L. B. HOLMES, L. E. BEowN.
