UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EARL A. THISSELL, OF NORTHAMPTON,MASSACHUSETTS.
SClSSORS-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,043, dated December 13, 1892. Application filed April 18, 1892. SerialNo. 429,591. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EARL A. THISSELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Northampton, (Florence,) in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ScissorsSharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawings.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective edged-tool sharpener, particularly for scissors, and designed for use in the household and by persons unskilled in the handling of tools generally. In providing a device of this kind it is desirable to make it inexpensive in order that it can be placed on the market at a small cost. It is also desirable to present the article in complete and durable form, which will render unnecessary any technical knowledge on the part of the user and will not require any adjustment or setting of parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a section transversely through the head of the sharpener.
The implement consists of a head 1 of substantially-cylindrical form, having in its surface a peripheral groove, the bottom of which is curved andis provided with file-like serrations extending diagonally across the groove in sinuous form. To one side of the head and extending laterally therefrom is arranged the handle 2, having an enlarged end and a reduced portion adjacent to the head, the said handle being rounded and in convenient form to be retained in the fingers.
The whole device is formed in one piece and is complete in itself ready for use, requiring no manipulation or adjustment of parts nor any particular knowledge of the use of sharpening-tools other than that possessed by the ordinary unskilled person.
In the use of the device it is my purpose that both blades of the scissors shall be sharpened at one operation, and it will be obvious that the form of the head with the curved groove therein is especially adapted for operating upon the reversely inclined or beveled edges of the blades simultaneously when interposed between them and moved back and forth toward and from the pivot of the scissors, it being understood that the user applies pressure to the two blades of the scissors by grasping the handles thereof, and thus keeps the blades in firm contact with the file'surface of the sharpener, the scissors being opened and closed as the sharpening implement is moved toward and from the pivot. The implement is held in the hand of the user at one side of the scissors. It will be observed that by reason of the curved form of the groove and from the fact that the file-surface extends entirely from side to side thereof that the sharpener is adapted to receive scissors of various sizes whose edges are beveled at different angles and that the working surface of the sharpener extends entirely across the cutting-edge of the blade.
While it is particularly advantageous to form the entire device in one piece, it will be understood that I do not confine myself to this construction. It is especially desirable, however, that the head be formed in one piece to present the double file-surface complete in itself.
I claim 1. A scissors-sharpener comprising a cylin drical head having a peripheral groove with a sharpening-surface and a handle extending laterally from the head and in line with the axis thereof, substantially as described.
2. A scissorssharpener comprising a cylindrical head having a peripheral groove with a sharpening-surface and ahandle extending laterally from the side of the head and in line with the axis thereof, said handle being an integral extension of the head, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EARL A. THISSELL. Witnesses:
H. D. BURNHAM, H. M. GATES.
