KNIFE.
Patented Sept. 23, 1890.

ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BAILEY, on srown, VERMONT.
KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,081,11ated September 23, 1890.
Application filed July '7, 1890. Serial No. 357,970. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. BAILEY, of Stowe, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved guard designed fornse on knives, fishing-rods, handles of hammers, and other tools, 650., and which is simple and durable in construction, is readily applied, and permits of obtaining a firm hold of the article to be grasped; also,pern1itting of suspending the article from one of the fingers when desirous of using the hand for other purposes.
The invention consists of a guard provided with a thumb-rest and a ring.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied on a knife, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the improved guard A is secured by transverselyextending rivets B to the cuttingblade 0, rigidly fastened in the handle D of an ordinary knife. The guard A is provided with a longitudinal slot for the passage of the knife-blade C, and also has its top E curved, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1, so as to form a convenient thumb-rest.
On the lower end of the guard A is formed a ring F, the opening of which extends transversely to the instrument or tool on which the guard is applied. From the front of the guard A extend forward two lugs G, fitting snugly onto the sides of the plate 0, so as to form a knife-shield.
The rivets B are preferably extended 0 either side of the guard, so that in case the latter is used on a carving-knife, for instance, the knife may be laid down, resting on the handle and the said rivets, without the blade 0 touching the table or table-cloth.
When the device is applied, the operator takes hold of the handle D in the usual manner, places the thumb of his right hand on the top E, and passes his forefinger up to the first or second joint through the ring F, While the remaining fingers grasp the handle D in the usual manner. By thus having hold of the knife the operator can conveniently manipulate it in carving, cutting, &c., the guard A insuring a firm grasping of the knife. When the operator desires to use the fingers of his right hand, except his forefinger, for other purposes, he can release the handle D, holding the knife suspended from his forefinger while using the other fingers for other purposes, without laying the knife aside.
The device can be readily applied on different kinds of knives, hammers, or other tools, and is also found useful and desirable on wooden-handled fiat-irons, lathing and shingling hatchets, handles of fishing-rods, &c.
Instead of applying the guard A on the tool,- as shown in the drawings, it maybe arranged in such a manner that the thumb-rest E is on the left of the knife, while the ring F is on the right-hand side. This arrangement may be necessary on special kinds of knives, according to the nature of the Work to be done with the knives, which may require the operator to hold them differently.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with aknife, of a guard held on the knife-blade next to the handle and provided with a curved thumb-rest, and a ring arranged transversely to the knife, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a knife, of a guard heldon the knife-blade next to the handle and provided with a curved thumb-rest, and a ring arranged transversely to the knife, and rivets forfastening the said guard to the knifeblade, the rivets projecting on either side of the guard, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM P. BAILEY.
