Description

No. 682,938. Patented Sept. l7, I90I. G. C. INGRAM.
HOBSESHOEBS KNIFE. :1 Application filed Nov. 20, 1900.)
W/TNESSES: //v VENTOR W Geo. C, Ingram #JJSMJV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. INGRAM, OF SOUTH TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
HORSESHOERS KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,938, dated September 17, 1901. I Application filed November 20, 1900- Serial No. 371165 (No modeli) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. INGRAM, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at South Tacoma, in the State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoers Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knives for hoof paring and cleaning; and its object is to protect the hand of the operator from abrasion while using the forward or front portion of the blade and provide such protection that the hand may be slipped down over a portion of the blade and the instrument used in this position without inconvenience to the operator. I attain this object by the improvement shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows my improved knife; and Fig. 2 shows a section of the same through the blade close up to the handle, where the improvement is located.
My improved knife consists of a curved blade a, having one edge sharpened, as usual, and having a reduced tang atone" end to receive the handle members 19, the front ends of which. terminate with a shank portion, said blade also having the usual curved member d at its front end. v
The blade at has that, part of its upper or dull edge adjacent the tang formed with an integral extension curved laterally to produce a combined protecting and thumb-rest member c. This membero extends forwardly and is disposed in a plane approximately that of the upper or back edgesof the handle member b, as best shown in Fig. 1. p
For ordinary services the user grasps the handle part Z); but when it is desired to use the extreme front end at of the blade to efiect the best results it is necessary for the user to grasp the knife close up toward the said front end. Now by having a part '0 arranged as shown and described it is obvious the user can readily slide thehand forward on the blade and firmly grip the blade near the part at without danger of cutting or otherwise in-' juring the hand, and at the same time provide for a firm gripping of both the blade and the handle, as a natural thumb-pressure can be exerted upon the back of the blade without undue strain to the thumb, as the ball or fleshy part thereof will still have a natural grip on the handle part proper.
I am aware that knives of this character have heretofore been made provided with an extension on the back edge of the blade; but so far as I know my invention differentiates from what has heretofore been provided in that its extension lies in a plane with the back or upper edge of the blade and the handleand forms a combinedthumb grip and rest.
Having now described what I claim, Letters Patent of the United States, is
As a new article, a horseshoers knife, having a blade, a handle whose upper edge lies in a plane with the back or upper edges of the blade, said blade having an integral laterally-curved member, extending longitudilny improvement,
nally of the blade, and formed on the upper or back edge of the blade, adjacent the front end of the handle, and in a plane with the upper or back edge of the handle, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE O. INGRAM.
