SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,500, dated February 19, 1895.

Be it known that I, JOHN A. EVERETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manicuring Implements, of which the following is a specification.

This is an improved implement or tool intended to be used for manicuring the nails, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described by means of which the process of manicuring may be accomplished quickly, efficiently, and elegantly and without danger of injury to the flesh.

A represents a shank provided with a suitable handle A.

B is a finger rest or thumb-rest formed substantially of the concave or ogee shape shown, in order that the end of the finger or thumb whose nail is to be operated upon may rest in the concavity or depression with the nail projecting horizontally over the upper edge of the rest B. This member B is secured by means of the right and left screw 0 tothe front side of the shank near the outer end thereof, and said screw has fast on it a hand wheel D by the rotation of which the thumb or finger rest Bis adjusted horizontally or laterally with relation to the shank A. This cutter is provided at its free end with a graduated slit F for receiving the nail, the outer end of said slit being formed into a concave cutting-edge F, so that the nail receives a com vex edge as it is cut, and the portion thereof being removed is accommodated by the slit F. This guide, which is shown in detail in Fig. 6, has its front edge grooved at H" and is so shaped that such grooved portion extends beyond the cutter E and on a continuation of the same curve. This guide is arranged so as to always coincide with the groove in the cutter, so that as the implement is moved forward to cut the nail the grooved guide H will guide the nail to the cutter, or rather will hold the nail in position as the cutter is moved toward it and as it performs its work.

The cutter is protected by an overlapping member or guide whose front portion K extends over the knife at substantially the same curvature as said knife, the left hand portion thereof K extending sufficiently beyond the cutting edge to protect it. The whole is integral with the shank I which is adj ustably securedby the screw Z to the upper surface of the shank A of the holder so that it can be adjusted with relation to the cutter.

The implement above described is adapted to be used either by a professional manicure or by the person desiring his nails manicured, in which latter case the implement can easily be held in one hand and by laying a thumb manicuring implement, comprising the combination of the handle and shank A A, the finger or thumb rest B secured to the front side of the shank and arranged to be adjusted laterally in. relation thereto, the knife or cutter E having its shank E bent back and secured detaehably to said shank A, said cutter being provided at its free end with the slit F for receiving the nail, the outer end of said slit being formed into the concave cutting edge F" and said slit growing gradually less in depth from its outer to its inner end, and the grooved guide I-I whose shank is detachably secured to said shank A and arranged to cause the groove in said guide to coincide with the groove in the cutter so as to hold the nail in position as the cutter is moved toward it, all arranged substantially as set forth.

The hereinbefore described improved lnanicuring implement, comprising the combination of the handle and shank A A, the finger or thumb rest B arranged to be adjusted laterally with relation thereto, the curved knife or cutter E E detachably secured to said shank A and provided with the slit F having the concave cutting edge F, the grooved guide H whose shank is detachably secured to said shank A and arranged to cause the groove in said guide to coincide with the groove in the cutter, andthe overlapping cntter-guard K extending from said shank A over the cutter and beyond the cutting edge thereof and conforming to the curvature of said cutter, all arranged substantially as described.

Ina manicuringimplement, the combination of the handle and shank A A, the curved finger rest B secured adj ustably to the front side of the shank and provided on its upper surface With the correspondingly curved Wall or nail rest B, the correspondingly curved cutter E E secured detachably to said shank A and provided with the concave cutting edge F and arranged to set on the finger rest behind said Wall, and the cutter-guard K ad- -justably secured to said shank A and extending over the knife at substantially the same curvature as said knife and at the portion K extending sufficiently beyond the cutting edge to protect the same,substantially as set forth.
