SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,786, dated December 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD JOHN SHARP, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Stockport, in the county of Chester, Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Ventilating Hats or other Head-Coverings, (for which I have obtained in Great Britain Provisional Protection No. 5,309, dated April 8, 1890,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in means for ventilating hats or other head-coverings, and has for its object to effect the ventilation in a more simple and effective manner than heretofore has been the case. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying two sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1, Sheet I, is partly a longitudinal section and partly a side view; Fig. 2, a plan. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 a plan, of the spring-band detached from the hat.

Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out my invention I employ a spring-band a, (see more particularly Figs. 3 and 4:, Sheet 11,) which I preferably form of very thin steel, with a tongue I) in the middle and holes therein, as well as near each extremity of the spring-band a, which permits of securing it flexibly in three places to the inside of the hat by means of fasteners c. This spring-band a is covered with suitable materiahsuch as cotton or wool, which permits of fastening it to the sweat-band d.

To facilitate the ingoing air having direct access to the forehead, I longitudinally divide the respective portion of the sweat-band in two parts cl 01'. (See Fig. 1, Sheet 1.) The lower part 01 is attached to the inside of the spring-band a and overlaps the upper part d,

which latter is fitted against the interior of the hat-body, preferably by securing its ends by means of fasteners e to the lower part d.

On putting on the hat a perfect easy fit is at once attained by reason of the lateral elasticity of the spring-band a, owing to its extremities being secured to the hat, causing it to conform to the shape of the head and leave always passages a (see Fig. 2, Sheet 1) between the same and the body of the hat, through which the air can enter the hat freely.

The described spring-band a, not being a conductor of grease or sweat and fastened to the sweat-band d, not only effects the ventilation of the hat, but also prevents the same becoming greased in front through perspiration, owing to the sweat-band 01 being partly isolated from the body of the hat by the said spring-band a, and the staining or softening of the hat thereby entirely avoided. The leather or other head-band (Z being so fash ioned as to admit of the current of air pass ing between the spring-band a and the hat playing direct upon the forehead, the head is thus kept cool and the generation of steam avoided, whereas in ordinary hat-ventilatlon the air is only admitted over the top of the sweatband d, and thereby acts as a condenser only of the steam generated below and not as a preventive.

It will be understood that the described improvements are not only applicable for hats, but also for other head-coverings, such as helmets and the like.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In means for ventilating hats and other head-coverin gs, a spring-band a, the ends and middle of which are flexibly secured to the interior of the hat-body, in combination with a sweat-band in front longitudinally divided into two parts 01 d, the lower part (1 of which is attached. to the inner side of the springband a and the upper part d fitted against the interior of the hat-body to form, respectively, air-spaces a between the lower sweatband part d and the interior of the hat-body, and a passage through the front of the sweatband for the air to play freely and directly onto the forehead, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
