Description

H. MERTZ.
AIR CUSHION SWEAT BAND. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2,1917.
Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
mw am HARRY MERTZ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIG-NOR TO BRIGHAM-HOPKIN-S 00., It; CORPORATION OF MARYLAND.
AIR-CUSHION SWEAT-BAND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Mun'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Cushion Sweat-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sweat bands for hats and especially for a hard shell straw hat, and affording means whereby a comfortable fit may be attained, and so constructed and arranged that the hat will not easily blow ofi the head of the wearer. 7 Most specifically the present invention consists in the provision of a sweat band fastened at its integral lower edge to the lower edge of the crown of the hat and spaced apart a slight distance from the crown and having secured to its outer face a strip of adhesive material of considerable width to prevent the band from stretching, permitting the latter, however, to yield to conform to the contour of the head of the wearer and producing a comfortable fit.
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure l is a bottom plan view, showing the application of my sweat band to a hard shell straw hat.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View through the hat and band with adhesive strip attached thereto, and
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view, showing the relative positions between the hat and band when there is a tendency for the hat to blow 0E the head of the wearer.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letters:
A designates a stiff straw hat of usual construction, having its lower edge D out- Gepies oi. this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent. Patqgfit gfl Jan, 15, 1918,,

wardly stretched or formed, and stitched to the lower marginal edge of the crown, and provided with a series of perforations E therein to permit a circulation of air through the space F between the band and surrounding portions of the crown, as is common in different forms of ventilating bands. A strip of adhesive material G is fastened to the outer face of theband and is of considerable width, in order that the band may afford a comfortable fit to the head of the wearer and which will prevent the band, usually made of leather, from stretching. Heretofore, fiber cords and elastic strips have been interposed between the band and the surrounding portion of the crown of the hat for the purpose of providing a space about the band to permit air to circulate, to ventilate the hat, but which would tend to make the band uncomfortable to the head of the wearer, restricting circulation and which, if of elastic material, would soon deteriorate from usage and subjection to the moisture being given off from the head of the wearer, and if of fibrous material, would tend to stretch with the hat, making the size too large after being worn for a while.
By the provision of the adhesive material of considerable width and attached to the band, the latter will be held to its size, the strip yielding with the band to conform to irregularities in the head of the wearer and making a comfortable fit, and the hat will also be prevented from blowing off under a gust of wind.
What I claim to be new is:
A sweat band for hats having its integral lower marginal edge outwardly flaring and stitched to the crown of the hat, and a strip of adhesive material of considerable width attached to the outer face of the band, and having its lower edge adjacent to the flaring portion of the band.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY MERTZ.
