VENTILATING STRAW HAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,846, dated November 30, 1880.

Application filed October 12, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. BANOROFT, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Straw Hats, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of myimproved hat, the inner or sweat band being partly cut away to show the construction more distinctly. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the hat.

My invention relates to an improvement in ventilating straw hats; and it consists in the application to a straw hat which is provided with a ventilating -braid running around it just above the hat-brim of a ventilating outside hatband and of a ventilating inside sweat-band. The result of the combination of this outside ventilating-band with the inside ventilating sweat-band and with the open-work ventilating-straw of the hat is to secure easy passage of air from the outside through to the head of the wearer, and to make the hat cool and pleasant for summer wear.

A represents theventilatinghat-band, which in appearance resembles the ordinary hatband, but which is woven or made so as toleave interstices in the fabric, readily permitting the passage of the air, the opening being as large as is consistent with the good appearance of the band. The whole band may be of ventilating fabric, or only the middle portion (represented by b in the figure) may be ventilating, and the parts a, a of the band above and below this open-work portion 1) may be made in the ordinary style, and not ventilating.

B is a sweat-band of the ordinary style, eX- cept that it is made ventilating by having numerous holes or openings through it, which holes are in line with those in the ventilating portion 0 of the hat.

The combination of the outside ventilatingband and of the inside ventilating sweat-band withthe open-work straw portion of the hat allows air readily topass from the outside through the interstices of the outer band, the open lattice-work of the straw, and the ventilating holes of the sweat-band, thus reaching the head of the wearer, and making the hat cooler and pleasanter than it would otherwise be, and the same combination permits the heated air to escape from within the hat.

.I am aware that ventilating outside hatbands have heretofore been proposed, and that it is not new to ventilate stiff hats and felt hats by the insertion therein ot' a species of wire sieve or metallic ventilating-plate. None of these, however, embody my invention, which consists in adapting to the ventilating straw braid of a straw hat the ventilating sweatband and the ventilating outer band, which I have heretofore described.

I claim- 1. The combination, in a hat, of the ventilating outer band, A, ventilating straw braid O, and ventilating inner sweat-band, B, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. The combination, in a hat, of the ventilating outer band, A, with the ventilating straw braid O, substantially as described.
