IMPRovEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,430, dated April 29, 1873 application filed October 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ODONNELL, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Ventilated Hats, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists iu forming inside the crown of the hat an annular chamber, into which air passes througha series of openings in the brim, the air escaping from the hat through openings in the crown. rlhe annular chamber has free communication over the sweat-band with the interior of the hat to allow the air to circulate around and cool the head. i v

is the crown, which is connected to the brim at a distance from the flange a so as to leave an annular space, D, between them, whosebotltom is formed by the brim, and which is open at top to the inside of the hat. d are openings in the brim, through which air from the outside enters the annular space or chamber D; and c are openings or holes in the crown C, through which the air escapes from the inside of the hat. .The annular diaphragm B', extending from the upturued part a of the brim to the crown-lining E, is perforated or formed of any suitable open-webbed material so as to allow the air free circulation around the head of the wearer to carry ofi' the perspiration and heat therefrom.
