IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,457. dated May 24, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. HEARD, of Aberdeen, in the county of Monroe and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which is represented a vertical section of a hat constructed according to my invention.

This invention relates to such hats as are provided with means of ventilation for the head of the wearer, and known as ventilators.

Its object is to provide for the freer and more rapid circulation of fresh air around and about the head of the wearer, and to provide otherwise a cheaper and more comfortable hat of the kind than is at present used; and to this end it consists in a novel construction of such hat, whereby the desired end is attained.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,A represents the main body or shell of a hat constructed according to my invention, which may be made of felt, paper, or other suitable material.

Said body or shell A is of truncated-cone shape, or of pyramidal or other suitable form, and has formed at its top an opening, a, for the free upward passa-ge of air. Directly above this opening a the shell Ais surmounted bya cap or cover, B, which is secured thereto by means of any suitable number of stays or braces b. This cap or cover B is sustained at a sucient height above the main body to allow the air to pass freely from under it, and its outer edge is made to extend far enough beyond the limits of the opening a in every direction to prevent the entrance therein ot' sun and rain.

Centrally arranged within the main body A, near the base thereof, is a head-band, O, for ttin g the head of thewearer. This headband is secured to the inner wall of the main body A by means of stays or braces c, allowing ample room for the free circulation of air over and around the head. The braces c, as also the similar braces b, which are made of some light material, instead of being arranged vertically', are so inclined outwardly at the top as to brace the parts which they connect, and thereby prevent, to a great degree, any disposition toward a lateral displacement of said connected parts relatively to each other.

The air around the head, on becoming heated, rises and passes out through the opening a, and its place is filled by the rushing in of colder air under the base ofthe main body.

By means of this invention more comfort may be enjoyed by the wearer, as the head may be, at all times, kept cool and well ventilated. Greater convenience is gained, since the hat, not trapping the air as other hats, but allowing it to pass on through, by having an equal or larger egress than its ingress, is not liable to be blown off the head in windy weather.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-

A hat consisting of the two parts A B and head-band (l, connected by stays c and b, essentially as shown and described.
