A. OTTO.
. ANIMAL GATGHEB..
N0.486,939. Patented Nov. 29.1892.
WITNESSES:` I INVENTOR BY g z ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST OTTO, OF SAGINAV, MICHIGAN.
ANIMAL-CATCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 486,939, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed April 18, 1892.
To all whom, in' Htcty concernf Be it known that I, AUGUST OTTo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Catchers; and I do declare thevfollowin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an animal-catcher, and it consists in the peculiar form and construction shown.
Figure 1 is a side perspective. Fig. 2 is a side View with the position of the parts altered. Fig. 3 is a back view, and Fig. 4 is an end View.
1 is the body of the catcher, and is yokeshaped, 2 and 3 being sides of the yoke.
4 is a tongue pivoted to one of the sides 3 by pivot 7, so as to extend across the mouth of the yoke. It is the distance between the sides 2 and 3 in length and designed to turn into the yoke, as shown in Fig. 2. In lthe tongue 4, about onefourth of its length from the pivot, I form a hole 6. This hole should be about the size of the groove 5 in the sides of the yoke.
5 is a circulargroove commencing upon the inside of side 3 near the end thereof and passing up the side in a straight line until the curve of the yoke is reached, when it takes the form of a circular hole and passes directly through the side, coming out and forming a circular. groove upon the outside of the side 3 of the yoke, extending to 14.
9 is a circular hole commencing on the end of side 2, running diagonally up it toward the inside of the yoke and coming out upon the inside about one-third the length of the side 'from the end. From this point a circular groove is formed corresponding to same size as hole 9 and groove 5 and curves along the inside of the yoke until it reaches the line of the diagonal hole 9, when again drill through the yoke, coming out on its back, intersecting the groove 5. This will leave the Serial No. 429,554. (No model) space 14 on the inside of the yoke ungrooved, except the end of the side 2. grooves I pass a rope 10, with one end secured to the tongue 4 at b, the other extending from the hole 9.
It is obvious that pulling upon the end 10' of the rope 10 when the tongue 4 is out will closeit and draw it to position shown in Fig. 2.
Sis a place for securing a handle to the back of the yoke.
I use the catcher as follows: With the tongue opened wide, the rope'in one hand,
the handle in the other, I approach the animal and carefully yextend the catcher until the yoke nearly encircles the leg, when with a quick pull on the rope I close the tongue, drawing it against the animals leg, which will be held between the tongue and the rope when the rope is kept tight. Loosening the rope will free the leg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An animal-catcher consisting of the yokeshaped body 1, having the grooves 5 and 9 in the sides of the yoke and a hole in one end thereof in continuation. of groove 9, and the tongue 4, hinged to the other end of the yoke and adapted to close the mouth of the yoke when turned inward, and a rope secured to the tongue 4 and passing through the grooves and holes, substantially as described.
2. In an animal-catcher, thev combination, with the yoke 1 and the grooves 5 and 9 in the sides of the yoke and a hole in one end thereof in continuation of groove. 9, of the tongue 4, pivoted to one end of the yoke and adapted to close up the mouth thereof, the rope 10, secured at one end of the tongue 4 and passing through groove 5 over back 14 of the yoke through groove 9 and adapted to pull the tongue 4 within the yoke, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' AUGUST OTTO.
