UNITED STATES HARRY M. JENKINS,
PATENT OFFICE.)
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
IMPROVEMENT IN SAIL-MAKERS NEEDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,620, dated December 28, 1875; application filed December 9, 1875.
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. JENKINS, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sail-Makers Needles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to the class of needles used by sail-makers; and it consists in the construction of the head or eye part of the needle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. e
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sail-makers needle embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are different views of the head of the same.
A represents the body of the needle formed with the ordinary triangular tine B at its lower end. The head 0 of the needle is made on the front side with a ridge, a, on a line, and corresponding with the vfront ridge 0 of the tine, whereby the head is made to pass more The top of the head is cuti down or beveled off from the front backward, as seen at i.
By this construction oftn head of the needle grooves or recesses are formed to receive the thread on both sides, without impairing the strength and efficiency of the needle ,or, v
in other words, above the eye the thread is made to take the place of metal.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sail-makers needle, having its head formed with a ridge, 0., corresponding with the front ridge 0 of the tine, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In a sail-makers needle, the head 0, constructed with the side grooves d d and top bevel t, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of December, 1875.
