SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,671, dated November 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J AMES WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sabine Pass, in the county of J eiferson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Trunk-Strap Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to trunk-strap fasteners, and is particularly designed in the nature of an improvement over my former patent, No. 465,225.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character whereby a strap after having been tightly drawn around a trunk or other article of baggage can be fastened without the use of the usual buckle.

With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a trunk with a strap around the same and fastened with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the fastener and the strap locked therein. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the strap about to be fastened. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the fastener.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary trunk or other piece of baggage, which is encircled by the ordinary buckle-strap B, having at one end the usual buckle O and the opposite perforated end; but any ordinary strap may be employed and adapted for use in connection with the fastener; but the ordinary strap described is preferably employed, so that the fastener can be used upon all straps. The said strap B after being tightly drawn about the trunk is securely fastened and prevented from becoming loose by means of the lever-fastener D. The said lever-fastener D is provided with a swinging lever portion E, having a tapered handle 6, provided at the lower extremity thereof with the securing-knob 6'. end of said lever member is provided with opposite-extended arms F, between which is formed the undercut bevel securing-face Gat the base of said arms, and designed to receive The upper the end of the strap passing between said arms and clamped upon said bevel face. Pivotally secured upon the pivot-pins H, between said opposite arms F, is the fixed securing member I. The said securing member I. is provided at one end between the arms F with the oppositely-beveled clamping-face J, facin g the bevel clamping face or base G between the arms F and at one end of the lever member E, and said beveled clamping-face J is provided with a series of engaging-teeth K, which when the lever member is straightened out engage the strap end clamped between the fixed andlever member beveled clampingfaces. The said fixed securing member I is provided with the upper bifurcated hook end L, comprising the opposite hooksZ and the intermediate slotl' between said hooks, the said opposite hooks receiving the buckleframe while the tongue of the buckle projects between the opposite hooks into the slot Z, thus providinga ready connection for the said buckle with the hook-securing member I of the fastener. After connecting the buckle of the strap with the member I the strap is passed around the trunk and the other end thereof passed between the arms of the lever E and between the clamping-faces ofsaid lever member and the securing member I. After tightly drawing the strap the lever member E is raised above the lock of the trunk below which the fastener is located, and is then straightened out below the lock of the trunk and against the face of the strap, thereby drawing the ends of the fastener tightly together and securing the strap around the trunk, The handle of the lever is held against the strap in a straightened position by means of the securing-loop M, working over the strap and designed to be placed over the lower securing-knob e. Sliding upon the strap B under the securing-loop M is the looprest N, made of leather or metal and adapted to slide over the strap, so as to form acheck or rest for the loop, and also forms a shoulder to hold the strap off from the body of the trunk to leave a space for the securing-loop to be easily slid into and out of position over the leverhandle 6.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-

1. In a strap-fastener, a hook-securing member receiving'the buckle at one end of the: strap and a lever member pivoted at one end to said securing member and adapted to clamp the other end of the strap between one end of the same and said securing member, substantially as set forth.

2. Atrunk-strap fastener coinprisinga fixed securing member having a bifurcated hook portion adapted to receive the buckle at one end of a strap, an opposite toothed beveled clamping-face, a swinging lever member having opposite arms at one end pivotally conneeted with said fixed member, and a beveled clamping-face at the base of said arms and between the same, saidlever member being designed to clamp the other end of the strap between saidoppositely-beveledclamping-faces, substantiallyas :set forth.

3. Atrunk-strap fastener comprising a-fixed securingmember having a bifurcated hook portion adapted to receive the frame and tongue of the buckle atone'end of the trunkstrap and an opposite toothed beveled clamping-face, a lever member provided with a securing-knob at one end, opposite arms, and a beveled clamping-face between and at the base of said-arms at the other end, said arms embracing and pivotally connected with said fixedsecuring member, a securing-loop sliding upon the trunk-strap and adapted to engage the securing-knob of said lever member,

and a loop-rest and check sliding upon the trunk-strap adjacent to said securing-loop, substantially asset forth.
