Description
(N0 ModeL) W. O. SLY.
ROPE OR STRAP ATTAGHING DEVICE FOR BUYGKLES, SNAP HOOKS, &c. No. 815,175 Patented Apr. 7,1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
WILLIAM G. SLY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ROPE 0R STRAP ATTACHlNG DEVICE FOR BUCKLES,'SNAP-HOOKS, &C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,175 dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed December 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. SLY, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Straps or Cords to Snap Hooks and the Like Metal Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the mode of attaching straps or cords to metal hooks and buckles; and it consists of a plate or frame having lugs or points which pierce the strap or cord, and also having ears on each side, which are beaten or hammered down over the strap or cord, firmly securing the plate thereto. Said plates or frames may have formed on orwith them a snaphook, a buckle,.or loop suitable for harness, Ste.
This improvement has for its object to pro Vide a means of securing said articles to straps and cords without sewing, as heretofore, resulting-in accomplishing such work in a more expeditious, economical, and better manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a snap-hook having my improved fastening, as seen, attached to a fiat strap. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a back View of same. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are like views showing a snap-hook attached to a rope or cord. Fig. 7 represents a tongue-buckle having my improved fastener attached to a strap. Fig. 8 is a reverse side of buckle shown in Fig. 3, showing point 0 and the boss d before they are hammered or bent down. Fig. 9 shows a loop with a ring having my improved fastening as attached to any intermediate portion of a strap. Fig. 10 shows same as attached to a rope or cord. Fig. 11 shows my improved fastening when used to splice two straps together. Fig. 12 is a detached View of fastener, showing interior and having point 0 and the boss 01 before they are hammered or bent down.
A is a plate or frame consisting of two parallel side bars, a a, united by one or more cross-bars, I) b, upon the inside surfaces of which are one or more sharp lugs or points, 0 0. Upon the side bars, a a, are made ears (1 d, which when hammered or bent down embrace the strap or cord on the opposite side to that of the cross-bars b b.
To this fastening device may be made a snaphook or a tongue-buckle or a loop, as shown in the drawings, thus adapting it as a fastening for these several articles instead of Sewing;
The manner of constructing and applying this device is as follows: The fastening is pref erably made of malleable iron, and when cast may have either the hook. buckle, or loop cast withitinonepiece. Theearsdprojectoutward from the side bars, a (t. Then when it is to be secured to the strap or cord the strap or cord is laid in between the said ears. The said ears are beaten or bent down with a hammer onto the strap or cord, forcing the points 0 0 into the leather or rope, thus quickly and firmly fastening the hook or buckle to the strap.
Having'described my invention, I clairn- The improved fastening for hooks, buckles, and the like, consisting of the plate or frame A, having bars a a, united by cross-bars b I), having lugs or points 0 c, and ears d d, constructed and applied to straps or cords substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
