Description

EDWARD S. BOYNTON, OF EAST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
APPARATUS FOR I-IITGI-IING HORSES, CLOTHES-LINES, &o.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 15,279, dated July 8, 1856.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. BoYNToN, of the town of East Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in the method of constructing an article for hitching horses to posts and other situations, also for fastening clothes-lines or any other line or strap, belt, or parts of harness where an immediate, quick, sure, and safe fastening is required; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the mode of applying a cam shaped lever and frame for hitching horses.
The drawing, (a section): Figure l is a side view with the cam open to receive the strap; Fig. 2, same when closed with the strap in and fastened.
Letter A is part of a post; B, frame of the lever; C, cam lever; D, the strap; E, spring to operate on cam.
The frame B, lever C, and other parts I make of metal in the form as shown in the drawing, or of any other required size or shape to suit circumstances, the principle to remain the same, to be fixed on the side or top of a post, or any other suitable place or position. The cam lever C, is slightly corrugated on the part that presses against the strap to prevent slipping, before it gets firmly fixed, the tongue of the lever is made sufficiently long to be operated on by the thumb and linger.
l/Vhen required to be used for a clothes line or a cord, I make on the outer cam part of the lever a concave groove to receive the same so that the cord may n'ot'be too much flattened.
To use this horse hitch the tongue must i main firm till by pressing on the tongue of i the lever to relieve the pressure of the cam it will open for the strap to be withdrawn. The utilities of this simple process is the convenience and expedition, with which av hook can be securely fastened up, and easily relieved, without the danger of being loosened, or strap drawn out, except by operating on the lever as before stated, also for clothes lines, and many other purposes, where belts, straps, cords or lines are used, this is an effective, simple method of fastening and loosening.
What I Claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist
The application of av cam shaped lever for horse hitches, in the manner and for the purpose; substantially as herein set forth and described.
June 9th, 1856.
