TRUSSU SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,087, dated November 12, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL SIMPSON BLACK- BURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which i'tappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This'invention relates to trusses, and has for its object to devise a simple and convenient means for securing the pad to the band, whereby said pad can be quickly adjusted on the band both laterally and at any relative angle to meet the wants of the patient, and which will admit of the pad being fastened without possibility of injuring the patient by slipping of the tool used for tightening the pad.
The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a truss embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the pad, showing the means for securing it to the band. Fig. 8 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. t is a perspective View of the connectingbar. The spring truss-band A is of ordinary construction, having the straight portion a, in its rear, which portion is round and designed to ==receive the pads O 0, each being secured thereto in a similar manner. The connecting-bar D, having head d at one end and the opening (1' at the other end, is held to the pad by the plate B The spring 1) between the pad and the connecting-bar is seated in a recess 1' in the pad, as shown, and permits the pad to yield and exert a gentle and constant pressure on the hernia. The inner end of this spring Z) passes through the opening d and through a slotj in the tubular projection J on the rear side of the plate B. The connecting-bar works snugly in this tubular projection, and is guided in its movements thereby, and is prevented from turning or pulling out by the end of the springb, which passes through the opening (Z in the said bar D. 'lhecoupling E has slots 6 in its sides to receive the band A, and is externally threaded at said slotted end to receive the screw-cap G. The steel dog F, inserted in the slotted end of the coupling, is of such length as to project slightly beyond the endot' the coupling, to be engaged by the inner end of the screw-cap, so as to be forced against the band A and clamp the same between the inner end of the dog and the head d of the connectingrod D. The inner end of the dog is depressed to fit around the band, and is provided with the sharpened rib f between its sides to bite into the band A when the cap G is screwed home. The cap G has openings g, which are designed to receive the prongs h of the safety screw-driver H, so that the latter cannot possibly slip and do injuryto the patient when loosening or tightening the said cap. The

To adjust the pad on the band, the cap G is loosened and the pad moved and turned on the band until the required adjustment is effected, when the screw-cap G is tightened and the position of the pad fixed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the band, the pad having the connectingrod and the coupling, of the steel dog depressed to fit around the band and having a sharpened ribf, and the screw-cap, substantially as described.
