CIGAR-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 485,234, dated November 1, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

. Be it known that I, FRANK H. SMITH,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cigar-cutters; and my objects are to embody with the device for cutting cigars a receptacle for containing the cigar-cuttings and a match-receptacle. Another object is a construction of the cutting apparatus, so that a person can hold and cut off the end of a cigar with the use of but one hand, and still another object is to so form the several parts of the frame that it can be made of castings which require but very little fitting, in order that the device may be produced complete at a very low cost, and thus adapt it more especially to advertising purposes. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an isometric perspective view of a device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the frame and movable lid on line A B, Fig. 1, the cutting-knife and spring for operating the lid being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is the same section as Fig. 2, with the exception that the lid is depressed as in the act of cutting off the endof a cigar. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the movable lid detached from Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a left-hand or rear end elevation of Fig. 4, showing two arms and pivots upon which the lid is vibrated. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of a portion of the rear end of the frame detached from Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of Fig. 6.

The main frame of the box consists of sides C and D, ends E and F, and a partition G, the box being preferably open at the bottom in the casting, which opening is closed by the box being secured to a base of wood, (shown at H, Figs. 2 and 3,) or, it necessary,

The upper part of the rear end of the box is closed by means of a plate I, Fig. 6, which plate is held in position by means of adown- Serial No. 430,862. (No model.)

wardly-projecting leg J, which terminates in a foot at K. It will be noticed that the plate by the foot K, the projecting part L engaging the top edge of rear end F, so that when a screw at F is down in position it will not only secure the plate I, but also hold the rear end of the box firmly upon the base H.

Fig. 1 shows the side of the box notched to receive the plate I, and also shows the end of one of the pivotal centers M of the movable lid N, the other pivotal center 0 of this lid having bearing in a similar position at the opposite side of the box.

The pivotal bearings M and 0, Fig. 5, are attached to arms P and P, Figs. 4 and 5, which arms project downward and rearward from the movable lid N. There is also a downwardly-projecting skirting Q from the under side of the lid, which when the lid isin position, as shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3, serves, in combination with partition G, to inclose aportion of the box D, which contains the cigar-cuttings.

The partition G, side walls C and D, and front end E, together with the bottom H, inclose a portion of the front of the box, which is used for a match-safe, being always accessible just under the front end of the lid, which is always raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 when not in use as a cigar-cutter, which I will now describe.

It has been already stated that the lid is hung on pivotal centers M and 0. These pivotal centers are held in position by the contact of a portion of the plate I, Fig. 1,and the front curved portion of the lid at R is shaped to the segment of a circle having the pivots M and O as the center.

At S are three perforations of different sizes through the curved portion of the lid, and secured to a lug T inside the space D is a spring cutting-blade T, whose top end is sharpened and is held in close contact with the inside of the curved portion of the lid, so that should the front end of thelid be depressed, as shown in Fig. 3, a cigar will have its end clipped oif by the end being drawn down across the edge of the knife if the cigar is inserted in either one of the holes S with its end projecting beyond the inside of the lid. There is a spring V, whose lower end is secured to the lug T, the upper end thereof having bearing against the under side of the lid for the purpose of holding the lid in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the holes S, into which the end of the cigar is inserted, being above the edge of the cutting-blade T. The paneled portion W of the top of the lid is reserved for advertising purposes. The upper portion of the rear plate I projects above the sides of the box and serves as a stop against which the rear portion of the lid contacts by the pressure of spring V. 4

In operation it is obvious that if a cigar is held between the thumb and index finger and the end of the cigar inserted through either one of the holesS a downward pressure with the heel or wrist portion of the hand upon the front portion of lid N will cause the lid to turn upon its pivotal bearings M and O and carry the point of the cigar down against the edge of blade T and cut off the end, which will drop into the receptacle D, the

I claim as my invention In a cigar-cutter consisting of a box forming a base therefor, a lid pivotally secured to said box, said lid having a portion thereof curved to the segment of a circle concentric to the pivots of said lid, perforations through the curved portion of said lid for the purpose described, and a cutter T, bearing against the under concave surface of said lid, the several parts operating in combination for the purpose described. a
