UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LILLY, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, Assienoa 'ro FERDINAND BAUMGARTEN, or SAME PLACE.
CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 375,298, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed March 22, 1887. Serial No. 231,937. (No model.)
sylvania, have invented a new and useful Im-' provement in Cigar-Cutters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 represents a top view, partly broken away, of a cigar-cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a cigar-cutter which is reliable in operation, and made in astrong, durable, and inexpensive manner, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box or casing which rests upon and is removably connected with the base B. On the inner sides of the casing are pieces 0, whose upper ends are recessed, forming the seat of a rocking lever, D, the handle E whereof projects through a slot, F, in the front wall of the casing,1 whereby said lever may be readily operatec G represents a cutter, formed of a blade of steel or other elastic metal, which is secured at one end to the lever D, and has its cuttingedge bearing upwardly against the under side of the top of the casing A, which top, as will be seen, has a series of openings, H, for the reception of the tips of cigars to be out.
A spring, J, is secured to the end of the lever D and a proper portion of the casing A for restoring the lever and connected parts to their normal positions. \Vhen a cigar is placed in either of the openings H, its tip is in the path of motion of'the cutter G. The lever D is then operated, whereby the cutter advances against the tip of the cigar and quickly and cleanly severs the same, the tip then dropping into the casing A.
The end of the cutter which is connected with the lever D is preferably bent, as at G, the bent portion being screwed or otherwise connectedwith the lever. The edge of the cutter presses upwardly against the top plate of the casing, as has been stated, especially when it passes under the openings H, the bent end thereof readily yielding as it is raised by the lever when the handle of the latter is depressed, whereby the cutter acts effectively against the t-ip of the cigar. The construction of the cutter avoids hinging of the same tothe lever and the use of a separate spring to force the cutting-edge against the top of the casing. As the lever is mounted. freelyon the bearingpieces, it has a large sweep and is adapted to operate powerfully.
The tips of the cigars, as severed, may be removed from the casing through an opening, M, in the base thereof, said opening, when the device is in use, being closed by a movable plate, N, which is attached to the base and provided with a finger-piece, the latter being accessible in the opening from below.
The parts of the device may be readily separated for removal of the blade for purposes of sharpening and repairs.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cigar-cutter having a casing with a top opening, bearing-pieces secured to the inner sides of the casing, having recesses, and a rocking lever with a knife secured thereto, the bearing portion of said lever resting in said recesses, substantially as described.
2. A cigar-cutter having a casing with top and side openings, a lever projecting through said side opening and pivotally mounted on pieces inside of said casing, an elastic cutter secured to the lever, and a spring connected to the inner end of said lever and to the casing, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cigar cutter, a swinging lever mounted freely on bearing-pieces within the casing, and having an elastic blade connected with it, said lever having a handle which projects through the side of the casing, these parts being combined and operating substantially as described.
4. A cigar-cutter consisting of a base and a casing thereon, the said casing having an opening in the top thereof, the bearing-pieces 0 within said casing, thelever D, with handle E projecting through the side opening, F, the

spring J, secured to the lever D and the inner side of the casing, and an elastic blade secured to the end of the lever D and bearing against the top of the casing, all substantially as deings in said notched tops, the spring J, secured 10 to the end of the said lever D, and an elastic cutter secured to the said lever and bearing against the under surface of the top of the easing, all substantially as described.
5. In a cigar-cutter, a casing with top and \VILLIAM H. LILLY.
