UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. FRIEDRICH SOHULTZE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,784, dated May 15, 1877; application filed April 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, H. FRIEDRICH SoHULTzE,
State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section on line 00 m, Fig. 2, of my improved cigar-cutter; and Fig. 2 is atop view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention is intended to provide an improved device for cutting off the points of cigars by the use of one hand only, the tips being dropped into a storage-receptacle; and the invention consists of a storage receptacle or box having a swinging and guided lid, with gageholes for the points of the cigars, and resting on a spring cutting-knife, that passes below the gage-holes and cuts off the points by pressure on the top piece or lid.
In the drawing, A represents the tipreceiving box or storage-receptacle, of suitable size, material, and finish; and B, the swinging top lid, that is hinged to a cross bolt, a, guided by its sides in the box A, and supported ,on a hinged spring-knife, G, that bears with its upper end on the under side of the lid, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to press it in upward direction.
The cutting knife 0 is connected, by a spring, 12, to a pivot-bolt, d, the spring being attached to the knife to prevent its getting loose. The upper end of the knife is bent at an angle to form contact with the lid and pass along the under side of the same, past the gage-hole a, when the lid is depressed. The
lid is provided with several gage-holes, a, of different sizes. for cutting the points of dilierent-sized cigars.
The lid B may be lowered until flush with the edge of receptacle A, being raised by the spring-knife as soon as the pressure is discontinued. The extent of swinging motion of the lid is controlled by a slot, 6, of the areshaped end of the lid B, and by a fixed screw stud or point,f, of box A, extending into the slot, and forming the stop for the lid.
The cigar is inserted, by its point, into one of the gage-holes, according to the size of the cigar, and held with the hand, while pressing at the same time the lid downward, which produces the cutting oil of the point, and the automatic return of the lid into its upward position by the spring action of the knife. The cut-off tips are collected in the receptacle A for further utilization, and removed from time to time by taking out the screw-stop f, so that the lid may be swung into open position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cigar-cutting device composed of a receiving-box or storage-receptacle, swinging and guided lid B, with gage holes in it for the points of the cigars, and an interior springknife, 0, passing over the gage-holes on depressing the lid, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
H. FRIEDRICH SOHULTZE.
