CIGAR TIP CLIPPER. No. 856,168. 1334 Patented Jan. 18,1887;

NITED STATES A'IENT rica.
CIGAR-TIP CLIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,168, dated January 18, 1887.
Serial No. 206,551. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY It. SHEA, a citizen of the United States, residing in Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Clippers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon.
I am well aware that cigar-tip clippers or cutters have been heretofore made wherein the clippingblade was caused tooperate when the cigar end is forced in the cigar-receiving opening and the plate having the opening is forced downward. My device differs from this in that a figure is provided which, being pivotally arranged in a base, operates when the cigar end is forced into the mouth of the figure. to move backward, and thus cause the cutting-knife to be projected across the'cigaropening and the cigar end to be cut off. My device differs also fromthe kind heretofore made in the detail of construction, arrangement, and operation,as hereinafter specifically pointed out.
The object of my invention is to make an ornamental, cheaply and simply constructed, and convenient easily operative device; and to that end my invention consists in the construction and arrangement as herein set forth, whereby the beneficial objects of my invention are attained.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in section.
' Referring to the drawings in detail, a, indicates a base or frame; I), a figure having a pivotal lug, c, which is pivoted to lugs or parts d.
e indicates a spring having a knife or cutting edge at its upper or free end, and is secured by a screw to the boss 0.
9 indicates a cigar in position before the device is operated to clip or cut the tip from the cigar.
The portion of the figure representing the mouth is provided with an opening, as shown, of sufficient size to receive the cigar-tip, and the cutting-edge is adapted to cover this open ing and slide close to it when the figure is thrust backward.
To use the device it simply becomes necessary to place the end of the cigar in the cutting-opening and force it backward, as in dicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the blade will be forced across the opening and the end of the cigar will be cut off and fall through the figure to the case a or to any receptacle provided to receive the cigar ends.
The elevated arms enable me to hang a lamp or supportacigar-lighting torch thereon.
Other forms or figures may of course be used, if desired, and the cutting-blade may be secured in other equivalent ways than that shown.
The spring 6 returns the figure to its normal position when pressure is removed.
I am aware that cigar tip cutters have heretofore been made consisting of a storagebox having a pivoted lid provided with gageholes, and having a spring-blade which operates to open the cover and cut the cigar-tip, and I make no claim to such construction. with such device the user must hold the cigar nearly perpendicular while cutting the tip,
while with my device the cigar is held nearly horizontal, and my figure, which is pivoted to stand while in its normal position more.
perpendicularly, is by the act of cutting forced backward to stand at an angle. The figure used by me does not act as a cover to theboX, but is pivoted to the box and project through an opening in the cover.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A figure, I), having an opening to receive a cigar-tip, in combination with a boxbase, a, having an opening to allow the figure to project therefrom, the'figure being pivoted within the box-base, and a cutting springblade, e, fixed to the base at one end and projecting across the cigar tip opening at its opposite end, substantially as shown.
2. Abase, a, having lugs d, in combination with a figure-piece, I), having tongue 0, pivoted within said base to said lugs and proj ecting therefrom, and a spring cutting-blade, 6, arranged to project upward into the figure and cut across the cigar-receiving opening, substantially as shown.
3. A cigar-tip clipper consisting of a base, a, having a figure, Z), pivoted thereon, said figure having its arms raised to support a cigar-lighting torch, and the spring-cutter e, substantially as shown.
Witnesses: TIMOTHY R. SHEA.
