Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. ARRANTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethton, in the county of Carter and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco cutters, and aims toprovide a device of this character which shall be simple, durable, substantial and inexpensive in construction, and which shall be convenient and efficient in use for cutting plugs of tobacco.
As a more specific object, the present invention has in view, the provision of -a cutter disk mounted for reciprocatory movements on a base for severing the plug and means for actuating the said disk.
With the foregoing general objects outlined, and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the invention is better understood, this invent-ion resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that this device is susceptible of alterations or deviations in its details within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
This invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein F igure'l is a perspective View of the cutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the arches employed in carrying out the present invention. Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a detail. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the present invention embodies a base, denoted generally by the numeral 6, and comprising two sections, which are preferably of sheet metal. The edges of the sections are brought together so as to leave a slot 7 therebetween, and the sections are connected at one end by a plate 8 which passes over the inner edges of the sections at one end and is riveted to the two sections. The plate 8 has a curled lip 9 in its outer end forming an eye, and a lever, designated generally by the numeral 10, is pivoted to the eye 9, this lever comprising a pair of strips or bars which have their lower ends o-fiset outwardly or spaced apart to provide ears 12 straddling the eye 9. A bolt 13 is passed t have the respective angular ends 17 and 17 secured to the respective sections of the base along their inner or adjoining edges. The angular ends 17 and 17 have the respective ears or feet 18 and 18 riveted to the sections of the base, the angular ends 17 and 17 being disposed adjoining the plate Send the rear end of the base, respectively.
A ruler 19 is secured on one section of the base, so as to extend away from the angular ends 17, the ruler being preferably integral with the respective ear 18. The angular ends 17 have a shim 27 secured therebetween along their outer edges, the shim being preferably secured in position by means of rivets or the like.
A cutter disk 22 is mounted 011 the base between the bars 16 and is adapted for reciprocatory movements between the angular ends of the bars, the edges of the disk 22 being beveled, as at 23, so that the edge of the disk may pass within the slot 7, with the beveled portions seating or running upon the edges of the slot 7 to prevent the body of the disk from passing excessively through the slot. The disk 22 is adapted to partially enter the spaces between the angular ends 17 and 17 when the disk is moved to ward the respective ends of the base, a rubber, leather or other cushion 21 being preferably disposed between the angular ends 17. The disk 22 carries an axle 25, and a pair of links 24 are connected loosely to the respective ends of the axle and to a rivet or pivot pin 26 carried by the lever 10. The axle is disposed below and is movable along the under run of the bars 16, so as to constrain the cutter disk from being swung upwardly, the cutter disk being permitted to have a slight vertical play on the base. The lever is fulcrumed to the base at a point beyond the respective angular ends of the bars, the pivot pin 26 being disposed at a distance from the fulcrum of the lever approximately equal to the height of the bars above the base, in order that when the lever is swung, the force provided by the movement of the lever will act along lines approximately parallel with the under run of the bars.
In use, plugs of tobacco may be severed or cut by placing them upon the base underneath the bars and against the respective angular ends of the bars, it being observed that as the lever is swung manually, the cutter is adapted to sever the plugs at both ends of the bars. The length of the piece of tobacco to be cut may. be conveniently determined by means of the ruler 19, as will be understood. It will be obvious that the cutter disk is adapted to move between both of the angular ends of the bars, so that as the disk is reciprocated to and from the re spective ends of the bars, the plugs may be severed at both ends. It is also to be noted that when the lever is swung, the force transmitted to the cutter disk through the medium of the links will act along lines approximately parallel with the under run of the bars in order that a most effective cutting action is possible. It will therefore appear from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, that this device may be readily and conveniently manipulated for cutting plugs of various sizes and cutting pieces therefrom of various sizes. It is also apparent that this device is simple, durable and substantial in construction and may be manufactured at a small expense.
As a whole, the present device provides a desirable and attractive implement for the purposes to which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a tobacco cutter, a base, a pair of bars disposed thereabove, and having angular ends secured thereto, a cutter disk disposed between the barsa-nd having an axle below and movable along the under run of the bars, the cutter disk being adapted to move between the angular ends of the bars, a lever fulcrumed to the base beyond the respective angular ends of the bars, and a pair of links connecting the respective ends of the axle and the lever, the links being connected to the lever at a distance from its fulcrum approximately equal to the height of the bars above the base, so that the force provided by the movement of the lever acts along lines approximately parallel with the under run of the bars. 1
