To all whom it may concern: a

Be it known that I, EDGAR L. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gunnison, in the county of Gunnison and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches,

' of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper fasteners of that class in which the paper is cut and bent over to hold the sheets together without fastening devices of any kind.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will punch the paper and bend it over by one movement of the hand.

Another object of the invention is to provide holding means for clamping the sheets of paper in position while being punched.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.

To accomplish the above and various other objects, my invention consists essentially of a punch operated by a handle to punch the paper, of a member operated by the said handle for bending the punched out portion of the paper upon the sheets of paper and of holding means for holding the sheets in place while the above described operations are taking place.

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich:

In these drawings, 1 is the supporting plate on which the punch proper is held by the screws 2. The frame of the punch consists of the bottom part 3, the head 4 and the connecting part 5. A plunger 6 is with the supportmounted in the head and is provided with a cutting member 7 which is screwed into the lower part of the plunger. The plunger is provided with a head part 8, against which engages a spring 9 for normally holding the cutter out of engagementwith the paper. 10 is a rotating member pivoted in the punch head and provided with striking arms 11 for engaging the top of the plunger for depressing the same. This member is caused to rotate by means of the handle 12 being pivotally mounted upon the axle of the rotating member and being provided with a spring pressed plunger 13 for engaging thearms 11.

The plunger is provided with a removable head 14, so that the same can be removed when worn and replaced by a new one. The base portion 3 is provided with a die plate 15 provided with an opening 16 through which the cutter 7 passes.

The device for bending over the paper as the same is punched consists of a plate 17 pivoted at 18 toa lever 19, pivoted at 20 to the connecting part 5 of the frame and has its upper end curved at 21 to come'in contact with an inclined part 22 of the handle 12.

Said lever 19 is held in vertical position by a spring 23 secured to its lower end, said spring having its other end secured to a hook 24 carried by the base 3. The free end of the plate 17 rests on lugs 25 forming part of the base 3 and this plate is caused to move upwardly at the end of its forward movement by means of a curved projection 26 .on the bottom of the plate, coming in contact with the lugs 25 so as to raise the plate.

Theplate is provided with a projecting head 27. about. midway of its ends. and said head is of substantially the same size as the width of the slot 16 in the die plate, so that as the piate 17 moves forward and upward the said head is caused to pass into the said slot 16.

To provide means for clamping the papers in position, I provide a handle 28 pivoted at through the sheets of paper and forces the new punched out portions into the slot 16.v On the further movement of the handle 12 the arm 11 leaves the plunger head, allowing the same to spring back, while the handle comes into engagement with the lever'19 and rocksthe same on its pivot, thus causing the plate 17 to move forwardly so that the head 27 engages with the punched out portions of the sheets and pushesthem backward, and then as the curved projection 26 strikes the lugs 25, the plate with its head is caused to rise, thus forcing the punched out portions of the sheets hard against the plate 30, so as to securely connect the sheets together. 7 i

lit will be seen that the nead 27 not only folds the punched out portions of the paper back upon itself, but it also forces such punched out portions through the slot 16 so that the sheets can be removed. when the handle 28 is raised.

It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent. I

I desire it to be understood that 1 may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I'claim as my invention:

1. A punch for-fastening sheets'of paper together, comprising a vertically movable plungerhaving a cutter head thereon, a die plate cooperating with the said head to punch out a tongue in said paper, a horizontally movable head below the die plate for bending the punched out. tongue of the paper, means for giving said horizontally movable head an upwardmovement to further bend the tongue against the body of the paper and a handle for operating the plunger and the bending head.

2. A punch for securing sheets of paper together, comprising a plunger, a cutter head thereon, a die plate cooperating with the cutter head to punch out a tongue in said paper, a horizontally movable plate below the die plate, a head thereon for engaging with the punched out tongue of the paper, means on said horizontally movable plate engaging with a part of the frame to give said plate vertical movement at a certain part of its horizontal movement and means for operating the plunger and plate.

3. A punch comprising a base portion having a slot therein, a head portion located above the base portion, a plunger operating in said head portion and adapted to cooperate with the slot in the base portion for slotting sheets of paper, means for recipro- I in the base portion, a vertical lever pivoted in the connecting portion and having its lower end pivoted to the said plate, a support on which the free end of the plate rests, a curved. projectionon'the bottom of the plate contacting with the support when the plate is moved horizontally, a head lo- L cated on the plate and adapted to engage the slot in the base, rotatably mounted contacting arms for the plunger and a handle for-rotating said arms and engaging with the vertical lever to actuate the horizontally movable plate. 1

5. A punch including a spring pressed plunger, rotatably mounted arms for contacting with and depressing the plunger, and means for rotating said arms.

6. A. punch including a spring presssed plunger, rotatably mounted for contacting with and depressing the plunger, a handle for rotating said arms and a catch associated with said handle for engaging with and r0 tating said arms.
