UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
CHARLES-S. BIRD, OF ELYBIA, OHIO.
- COMBINED- TOBACCO Box AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent No. 293,404, dated February' 12, 1884. Application filed February 12. 1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern,
u Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BIRD, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined rIobacco Box and Gutter, ofwhich the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a pocket tobacco box or receptacle for holding plug-tobacco, provided with a cutting attachment for severing from said plug a small piece sufficient for achew; and it consists Vof a box having one open end for`holding the plug, and provided with a pivoted frame having a knife shutting across said open end of the box in such a Inanner that said knife may be used to cut off the required piece from the plug projecting out of said opening, said device being constructed,
and operating substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aperspective view of my device, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is alike perspective View, sh owing the knife in the ac t of cutting,` or in position for cutting, a piece off from the projecting plug. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device.
A represents a rectangular box, having one end left open for the insertion of The interior of said box is provided with a follower-plate, a, attached to one end of a spring, s, the purpose of which is to push the plug toward the open end of the box.
B designates a frame, the arms b of which are pivoted at b to the box A, near its rear or closed end, to give an approximately stra-ight cut to the knife B', which is carried at the opa plug of toposite end of said frame. The knife, when in the position shown in Fig. l, closes the open end of the box A. The lower front edge of the said frame is made sharp to forni a cutting edge, the front part of the frame forming a knifeblade. The front corner of the frame has a lip, C, for the purpose of enabling it to be readily raised.
The manner of using this device is to raise the frame `-sufficiently .to let the plug project as far as required, then close the knife down and sever the piece from the plug by pressing down the frame with the hand.
Vith the use of this device a tobacco-chewer `may easily cut from the plug the required amount for a chew, thus overcoming the difficult and unpleasant operation of biting off the chew.
A dampened sponge may be placed in rear of the follower, to keep the tobacco moist.
Having described my invention, I claiml. As a new article of manufacture, the tobacco-box herein described, consisting of the b'ody or box A, having an open end. and the franieB, carrying knife B, and pivoted at b to said box A, as set forth.
2. The tobacco-box described, consisting of the box A, having an open end, the frame B, pivoted to the box A at b, the knife B, the in closed follower a, and spring s, as and for the purposes specified. cHAs. s. BIRD. Witnesses:
