COMBINED MATCH BOX AND CIGAR CUTTER.
Patented May 26, 1885.
INVENTOR %;4, m
Myw ATTORNEYS WITNESSES rrn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BARTENS, OF ORANGE, NE? JERSEY.
COMBlNED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,590, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed April 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES BARTENS, of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a combined match-box and cigar-cutter that collects the cut-off tips of the cigars; and the invention consists of a matchbox having a cutter secured to and projecting from the body of the box into the cover, which latter is provided with a side opening for the cigar, and with a spring-plate that forms the bottom of the cover, which acts as a receptacle for the cutoff ti s.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved combined matchbox and cigar-cutter, showing the cover in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts.
A in the drawings represents the body of a match-box, having a cover, A, hinged to the body, and acted upon by a spring, a, secured to the inside of the body, and pressing against a projecting heel, a, attached to the cover near the hinge a", as customary in match-boxes of this class. The body A is provided at the inside of the wall, near the hinge a with a cut ter, 13, that is screwedor otherwise fastened to the wall of the body, and that extends above the body into the cover. The projecting end of the cutter is preferably made of semicircular shape. The cover A has a circular side hole, O, which is closed by the projecting end of the cutter when the cover is closed, the opening O and the cutter 13 forming an effective device for cutting off the tip of a cigar. The tip is inserted while the cover is in open position, and the cover then closed, so that the tip is cut by the action of the fixed knife B. The cover A is provided with athin steel plate, D, secured to the rear wall of the cover, and extended toward the front wall of the same, so as to form with the cover a receptacle for the cut-off tips. The spring-plate D is pressed by its own elasticity against an abutment, d, of the front wall of the cover A. It is provided with a small catch, (1, that is engaged by the nail of the finger, in order to bend the springplate in outward position for removing the tips from the cover A. As the tips are collected in the cover, they cannot drop into the body of the match-box and interfere with the matches in the same.
In using the match-box the cover is opened, a match removed, the tip of the cigar then inserted in the side opening of the cover, then closed, whereby the tip is cut off and retained in the cover.
Opening and closing of the cover once suffices for accomplishing two things-via, the removal of a match and the cutting off a tip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a match-box, A, having a cutter, B, projecting out of the box, with a cover, A, hinged to the box and provided with a side opening, C, and with a spring-plate, D, that forms with the cover a receptacle for the cutoff tips of the cigars, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a match-box, A, being provided with a cutter, 13, secured to and projecting out of the box, a hinged cover, A, having a side opening, C, and an abutment, (Z, at the front part of the same, and a springplate, D, attached to the rear wall of the cover, and provided with a catch, d, at the front end, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined match-box and cigar-cutter, a cover, A, provided with a side opening, and a spring-plate attached at one end to the same and provided with a catch at its free end, so that the spring-plate can be bent to the outside of the cover for removing the tips collected in the cover, substantially as set forth.
4. In a combined matchbox and cigarcutter, a cover having a side opening for the insertion of the tip end of the cigar, and a springplate that is attached at one end to the cover and adapted to rest by its opposite free end on an abutment of the cover, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
