PATTERN FOR DRAFTING TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,014, dated October 25, 1892.
Application tiled August 3l, 1891. Serial No. 404,257. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHAEALD F. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful .Improvement in Adj ustable Charts for Drafting Patterns for Trousers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an adjustable chart for drafting patterns for trousers, constructed of parts as hereinafter described.
Figures l and 2 represent front and rear charts, respectively, embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a section on line .fr 0c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a chart adapted to be used in ldrafting a pattern for trousers. The said chart is composed ot' two parts B and C, each of which is formed of sections of card-board or other suitable material, adjustable relatively to each other. The part B, from which the pattern for the'front part of the pantaloons is drafted, is composed of the sections D,E, F, G, andH, and the part C isformed ofthe sections J K, L, M,and N. The lower sections D and E of the part B are connected at their lower ends by a narrow neck integral with said parts, as at c, and the sections J and K of the part O, from which latter the rear portion of the pattern for the pantaloons is to be out, are adjustably connected at their outer ends by aslotted tongue o, attached to one of said sections, and a clamping-screw c, connected with the other section and movable in the slot of the tongue. The lower sections of each part are provided with the slots d, extending lengthwise thereof. Two of the sections of each part, as F and G of the part B and L and Mof the part C, are each provided at one of its ends with a pine, held in an opening therein and adapted to move in the slot d in the correspondinglower section for adjustment of said sections. A nut eX on a threaded part ot said pin binds the said sections, when adjusted, in place. The inner edge of each of the sections Gand L is provided with a slotted arm or extension v 5o fto receive a threaded pin d on the corre spending sections F and M for adjusting the position of said connected sections. The upper end of the section F extends beyond thev section G and is provided on one side with an arm g', extending at a right angle therefrom and having a slot h therein. One end of the section Il is connected with the section G by means of the pin j, which is heldin the said section H and moves in a curved slot 7o in the section G. The other end of the section H has a threaded pin Z, which moves in the slot h in the arm g. Nuts on said pins bind the sections in place when adjusted. The section N of partir() is pivotally connected with the upper end of section L by means of a pin m, and has its free or outer end adapted to contact with and extend across or lap an arm n of the section M. A measuring-scale P is attached to or printed on each of the sections D, E, J, and K parallel with and adjacent to the slots d thereof, and on the sections E and L parallel with and adjacent to the slots g, therein, and on the arms g and n of the sections F and M, respectively. The sections of the parts B and C bear a resemblance in outline to a corresponding portion of the garment which it is intended to lay out.
In using the chart described, the length measure being given the lower and upper twin sections of each of the parts, are respectively moved on each other until the required length is indicated by the figures of the Ineasure desired, being in line with the lower edge of the upper sections, when the clamping-nuts are then tightened on the connecting-pins c, so as to hold the said sections together. The upper ends of each of the pairs of united upper and lower sections are then moved apart, as on a pivot, on their united lower ends, until onlt-he measuring-scale P,- on the arms f of the sections G and L, the figures indicating the proper hip measure is in line with the inner edge of the upper sections F and M, respectively, when the nuts on the pins d are clamped on the same. The sections Hand N are then adjusted so that their upper ends will register with the proper mark on the scale on the arms g and n of the sections F and M, respectively, for the waist measure desired, andthe nuts on the connecting-pins of the sections are then screwed thereon, so as to hold the sections in fixed position. The chart as thus adjusted is then placed on the material from which the pattern is to be cut, when the ICO outline thereof can be readily traced by pencil or chalk.
By employing a chart constructed as herein described a uniformity of outline can be preserved in cutting for garments of different sizes, each of the lines of the outline of each pattern being uniform or similar, as the same general shape or form or outline is presented in each adjustment of the sections.
Different styles of charts may be used, the sides of the sections being more or less curved or straight, if desired, the feature of the invention being sectional charts extensible in length and width, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I clailn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable chart for drafting trousers, consisting of an upper and lower pair and a section pivoted to one section of the upper pair and adapted to have its free end movable across a rearwardly-proj eating portion of the other section of said pair, the sections of the lower pair being connected at theirlower ends and longitudinally adjustableon the upper pair and one of the sections of the upper pair having a projecting' arm adapted to be adj usted on the other section of the said upper pair, substantially as described.
2. An adjustable chart for drafting patterns for trousers, consisting of upper and lower pairs and a section pivoted to one of the sections of the upper pair, the sections of the lower pair having a connecting neck integral therewith and said sections being longitudinally adjustable on said upper sections and one of the sections of the upper pair havinga slotted projecting arm for adjusting it on the other section of the upper pair, substantially
