GARMENT-TEMPLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed June 22, 1914. Serial No. 846,597.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAUDE W. RUssnLL, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Carterville, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Garment-Templet, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a templet or form adapted to be employed in the making of womens waists.
The invention aims to provide a templet or form for the back section of a waist which may be manipulated readily by any person whether skilled or unskilled in the art of dressmaking.
It is unnecessary for the operator to rely upon judgment or skill, the operation of shaping the back section of the waist properly to the form of the wearer being purely a mechanical one.
It is within the scope of the invention to provide a device of this type in which proper allowance may be made for seams. In the device herein disclosed, all necessary circumscribing measurements may be accurately laid down and, as well, the lengths of the various parts of the back section of the waist may be determined readily.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of thattype to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, a single plan view discloses the invention.
The templet hereinafter described is fashioned from some flexible substance,
such as linen cardboard, although any desired material may be employed in the making of the parts hereinafter described.
The templet herein disclosed may be described as comprising a body, the body including the edge strip 135, the secondary strip 141, and the supplementary strip 150. The back section of the templet comprises the back plate 162, the back strip 173, and the extension 182.
The device herein disclosed is adapted to be used in laying out the back of a waist and is in the form of a templet comprising an edge strip 135, the under arm edge of which is shown at 136. The strip 135 is graduated throughout a portion of the edge 136 as shown at 137 and adjacent the graduations 137 is located an upright slot 138 receiving a clamp 139 forming a pivotal mounting for an extension 140. A secondary strip 141 is provided and is equipped adjacent its upper end with a transverse slot 142 adjacent which are located gradua tions 143. In this slot 142 and in a slot 148 in the strip edge 135 is adjustable a clam 149.
By means of the elements last above described, bust dimensions may be taken. The secondary strip 141 is equipped adjacent its lower end witha transverse slot 144. The strip 141 isgraduated adjacent the slot 144 as indicated at 145. There is an upright slot 146 in the strip 135 and in the slot 146 and in the slot 144 is adjustably mounted a clamp 147.
By means of the structures last above described, the waist dimensions may be laid off. A supplemental strip 150 is shown and is provided with a transverse, graduated slot 151 receiving a clamp 152 mounted in the upper end of the secondary strip 141. By means of the mechanism above described, various bust dimensions may be determined. The secondary strip 141 is provided adjacent its lower end with a slot 153 registering with a slot 154 in the supplemental strip 150. Mounted to move in the slots 153 and 154 is a connecting element 155 permitting relative longitudinal movement between the strips 141 and 150. A link 156 is connected by means of a pivot element 157 with the upper edge of the supplemental strip 150 and by means of a pivot element 158, the upper end of the link 156 is connected with a shoulder piece 159.. The arm hole is defined, as indicated at 160 by the end edges of the parts 135, 141,150, 156 and 159. The shoulder'piece 159 is graduated along its upper edge as shown at 161. A back plate 162 is provided and is equipped with a transverse slot 163 receiv ing a clamp 164 mounted to move in the slot in question and in a slot 165 formed in the shoulder piece 159. The upper edges of the parts 162 and 159, indicated at 166, define the shoulder seam. A portion of the edge of the back plate 162 is curved as shown at 167 to form the neck.
In the back plate 162 is formed an upright slot 168 receiving adjustably a clamp 169 mounted to move in a transverse slot 170 formed in the supplemental strip 150. Adjacent its upper edge, the supplemental strip 150 is graduated as shown at 171. One upright edge 172 of the back plate 162 coiiperates with the scale 171. A back strip 173 is provided, the same having adjacent its upper end' a transverse slot 174: receiving adjustably a clamp 175 mounted in the back plate 162. The upper edge 176 of the strip 173 serves to define a portion of the neck. Intermediate its ends, the back stri 173 is supplied with atransverse slot 17 alined with a transverse slot 178 formed in, the back plate 162. In these slots is mounted movably a connecting element 179.. Near its free longitudinal edge, the back strip 173 is provided with an upright slot 180, the strip being graduated adjacent the slot, as shown at 192. Mounted to move adjustably in the slot 180 is a clamp 181, pivoted in the upperend of an extension 182' provided with a slot 183, receiving slidably, a guiding or connecting element 18% attached to the back strip 173 adjacent the lower end thereof. Formed in the supplemental strip 150 is a long, curved slot 185 receiving a clamp 186 mounted in the upper end of an auxiliary strip 187 carrying adjacent its lower end a connecting element 188 mounted to slide in the slot 185. Formed transversely in the auxiliary strip 187 near its lower end is a transverse slot 189 receiving a clamp 190 pivoted in the lower end of the extension 182. Adjacent its lower end, the extension 182 is graduated transversely as shown at 191.
The length of the under arm seam may be determined by means of the scale 137. The bust dimensions are determined by the scales located adjacent the slots 151 and 142. The waist dimension is read 011 the scale 145 which lies near the slot 14% and the waist dimension may be determined, further, by means of the scale 191, proper adjustment at this point being possible owing to the presence of the slot 189. The back length may be read off on the scale 192, the slots 180 and 183 affording the necessary adjustment. Owing to the presence of the slots 177, 189 and 174, seams may be allowed for. The clamp 16% is mounted to move in slots 165 and 163 and thus the length of the shoulder seam may be determined. The back width may be ascertained, because the edge 172 of the back plate 162 is adapted to coiiperate with the scale 171. The slot 174 permits the necessary transverse adjustment of the back strip 173, to determine the neck dimension.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A templet for forming the back of a waist and comprising an edge strip; a secondary strip overlapped upon the edge strip; a supplemental. strip overlapped upon the secondary strip; a shoulder piece; a link connecting the shoulder piece with the supplemental strip; the edge strip, the secondary strip, the supplemental strip, the link and the shoulder piece cotiperating to form a portion ofthe arm-hole curve, and the link permitting a shifting of the shoulder piece to vary the contour of the armhole curve; means for connecting the secondary strip with the edge strip to permit relative longitudinal and transverse movement therebetween, thereby to vary the'contour of the arm-hole curve; means for movably connecting the secondary strip with the supplemental strip to vary the contour of the arm-hole curve; and means independent of the link for connecting the shoulder piece adjustably with the supplemental strip.
2. A templet for forming the back of a waist and comprising a body; a shoulder piece; means for connecting the shoulder piece movably with the body; a back plate; means for connecting the back plate directly to the body and the shoulder piece to permit 7 the back plate to move transversely of the templet and longitudinally thereof; a depending back strip; means for connecting the back strip directly to the back plate to permit the back strip to move transversely of the templet; a depending extension; means for connecting the extension to the back strip to permit relative longitudinal movement therebetween; an auxiliary strip located within the peripheral contour of the templet and spaced from the forward edge of the body toleave the forward edge of the body unencumbered; means for movably connecting the auxiliary strip to the lower end of the extension; and a sliding connection between the upper end of the auxiliary strip and the body, whereby the upper end of the extension may be moved longitudinally of the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
MAUDE V7. RUSSELL I/Vitnesses R. A. MooRnYHAM, C. M. WnsTEnMAN.
