To all whom it may concern:

Be it known'that I, FELIX BREIRLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Drafting Instruments, of which the following-is a specification. I

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in skirt drafting instruments, and pertains more particularly to an instrument of the type mentioned which is employed to lay outthe upper part of the gores of the skirt.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved, simple and economical instrument of the type described which can be easily operated and which is capable of ready adjustment to enable gores of varying sizes and shapes to be laid out.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 ofFig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary central section at the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a front end elevation.

In accordance with the present invention, one end of an end arm 1, is rigidly secured to a side arm 2, by any suitable means, such as rivets 3. A second side arm 4 is pivoted by means of a pin 5 to the opposite end of arm 1. Arm 4 is slotted at 8 to receive a thumb screw 9 that is carried by a marker 10. The arm 9 has a slot 13 to receive a set screw 14, carried by a marker 11. A pin 12 is carried by each marker and projects into the slots of therespective side arms to guide the marker in its sliding movements on said arms, so as to assure the edges 12 of the markers to at all times maintain a right angular relation to the side edges of the side arms. A second end arm 15 is pivoted at 16 to arm 4, and has a curved slot 17 to receive a thumb screw 18, that is carried by the arm 2. Each side arm has a mark a thereon adjacent the end arm 1.

2 and 4 are each provided with scales or graduations, one, for a skirt which requires seven gores, one, for nine gores, and one for eleven gores, The arm 15 is provided with 'graduations corresponding in number with eachof those on the arm 4. In drafting a skirt which is to have nine gores, for a twenty inch waist, and a forty inch hip, marker 10 is moved to the number 20 on the scale that appears in alinement with the number 9, which number indicates the number of gores the skirt is to have. The marker 11 is then moved to the graduation 40, on the scale in alinement with gore grade 9. The outer ends of the

2 and 4, are then adjusted with reference to each other, by means of the thumb screw 18, so that the graduation mark on the arm 15, corresponding with the graduation mark on the arm 4, to which the marker 10 is adjusted, shall be opposite said thumb screw. The instrument is then laid upon the paper of which the pattern is to be made, and chalk lines are made at a, a, and opposite the points 6, b, on the movable markers 10 and 11. A chalk line is then drawn along the outer edge of the arm 4, and the outer edge of arm 2 betweenthe chalk marks a, and b. This last named chalk line forms a portion of the circle of the 20 inch waist for which the instrument is set. The instrument is then moved until the edge 20 of the arm 15, coincides with the chalkmarks which have been made opposite the points 6, b, and a chalk mark is drawn along the edge thereof connecting the two said marks. This line gives the curve of the skirt gore. By adjusting the instrument correspondingly, a skirt of any stated waist and hip measure may be drafted.

What is claimed is:

1. In a skirt drafting instrument, a pair of spaced opposed side arms arranged in substantially parallel relation, an end arm connected rigidly to one end of one side arm and pivotally connected to the adjacent end of the other side arm, each of said side arms being longitudinally slotted and having a series of scales thereon for difierent grades of skirts, a marker for each arm, each marker having a guide pin that extends in the slot of the side arm and a thumb screw to hold the marker in any position to which it may be adjusted, a second end arm pivotally connected at one end to the opposite end of one side arm, sald second end arm having a curved edge and a slot and having a scale adjacent the slot and corresponding'to the scale on one of the side arms, and a thumb screw carried by the opposite side arm and projecting through the curved slot of the second named end arm.
