UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZACHARIAH DEMAREST, OF PATERSON, NFV JERSEY.
WAlST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,001, dated October 25, 1892.
Serial No. 437,251. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ZACHAEIAH DEMAREsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a boys Waist--that is, a waist to which the pants are buttoned-whereby the tearing off of the back buttons is prevented; and it consists in the novel and peculiar arrangement of the waistband, in the connection of the latterwith the reinforced shoulder-seams, and in the arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure l is a rear elevation of the waist embodying my improvement attached to a pair of pants. Fig. 2 is a front elevation orinside View of said waist. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 0c, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a similar view illustrating the effect of my improvement on the Waist when in action.
In the drawings, a. represents a boys waist provided with the waistband b, on which are attached the buttons c, to which latter the pants are buttoned, as will be manifest. The central portion of the waistband is downwardly curved to insure a better tit of the waist, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. About the upper extremity of the shoulder-seams are arranged buttons e, to which are detachably secured elastic bands f, the lower parts of which are suitably fasdownwardly-curved portion of the waistband, as clearly shown in the drawings. If desired, the shoulder-seams may be reinforced by a separate band or lap d to prevent the tearing or ripping of the cloth when a strain comes upon the buttons e. For convenience I prefer to use any sort of detachable patent buttons for securing the elastic straps to the waist, so that said straps may be easily detached when said waist is about to be packed or washed. `When said waist is in use, the waistband will fit snugly around the boys waist. As the back of the garment is cut so as to form a blouse h, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings= there is practically no strain on the elastic bands. When, for instance, the boy bows or bends over when playing' or exercising, the pants naturally pull down or exert a certain strain on the buttons attached to the waistband. This strain in ordinary Waists is sufficient to tear the said buttons off.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide elastic straps on the inside of a boys waist to support the nether garments, and I make no claim, broadly, to such device, but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved boys waist herein described and shown, combining therein a waistband with its center portion downwardly curved, shoulder-seams, a button secured to each of said seams, a button secured to the center of the downwardly-curved portion of the waistband, and elastic bands connecting said buttons on the shoulder-seams with the button on the waistband, all said parts substan tially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this lith day of June, 1892.
ZACHARIAII DEMAREST.
