UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. -GEARI-IART, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,438, dated September 27, 1892.
Application filed December 1, 1891. Serial No. 413,680. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN C. GEARHART, of Villiarnsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. p
This invention relates to wash-boards having corrugated or grooved metal plates for their rubbing-surfaces; and it consists in a Wash-board of this description of lnovel construction, substantially as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l represents a face view ot a washboard embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section upon the line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. t a horizontal or Jtransverse section upon the line 4E 4 in Fig. l.
A indicates a transversely grooved or corrugated plate, which constitutes the rubbingsurii'ace of the board. This plate is made of cast-iron or other cast metal coated with cop per or other suitable non-corrosive material and of sufficient thickness to secure stiffness and durability. The corrugations or grooves l) b in it are of V shape, of considerable depth, and have their sides at a suitable angle to hold large quantities of water within them while the board is in use, thereby securing the cleansing of the goods being rubbed on the board more thoroughly and with greater ease and rapidity. Said rubbing-plate A is corrugated or grooved alike on both of its sides or faces and is made reversible Within the frame B, which carries it, so that when one of its sides or faces is too much worn it can be turned about and the other side or face used instead, thereby enhancing the duing this slide D, which forms a lock or stop to the rubbing-plate, out of the Way of said slot the rubbing-plate A may be slipped out of the main frame, and after reversal may be entered within the frame again and be similarly secured. Said slide D is held in place by bolts or screws f f, passing through upright slots g g in the end portions of the slide and entering within or through the slotted side of the main frame. One of the slots g is a closed one; but the other slot g opens through the end of the slide D, so that on slaokening the screws f f said slide may be adjusted or slid to bring its open-slotted end out of engagement with the screw f, that passes through it. This admits of the slide being swung to one side upon the other screw f as a pivot, which allows ofl the rubbing- ,plate A being slipped out of the main frame through the slot c therein, in order to reverse the rubbing or acting surface of the plate when required, and thereby adding to or ,doubling its durability.
In the drawings only one side upright of the main traine has a through-slot c in it, mere grooves in the other side upright and in the head and lower cross-piece of said frame servingto support the other marginal portions of the rubbing-plate A; but, if desired, both side uprights may have through-slots in them and each be provided with an opening and closing slide D for entry and removal of the rubbing-plate through either side upright.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In Wasl1-boards, the combination of the removable and reversible rubbing plate A, grooved or corrugated on its opposite sides or faces, the rnain frame B, adapted to receive laterally through or within it the marginal portions of said plate and having either of its side uprights provided With a throughslot c for entry and removal of the plate and the adjustable slide D, opening and closing said slot and provided with a closed slot g at its one end and an open slotg at its other end, and the pins or screws f f, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN O. GEARIIART.
