Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. WITSIL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WM. DARMAN, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,532, dated November 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. Wr'rsrL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whichw- Figure l is a perspective view, parts of the case being represented as broken away to show the internal structure. Fig. 2 is a detached view of thc door.
The same letters are employed inthe different views when referring to parts that are identical.
The box A is a hollow cube, on the inside surface of which are ribs B, placed on each face of the cube, the middle one being a diagonal andthe others parallel therewith. These ribs lform at their points of junction acute angles with those upon the adjacent sides.
The cnbical box thus constructed is suspended upon axles C and O, attached at opposite corners of the cube, the journals o f which are supported in suitable bearings on the frame D. The axle C is extended to receive the crank E, or a pulley if driven by a belt.
An opening, F, is formed in one of the sides, which is closed by a water-tight door, F', held in place by a bar, G, and screw I and eye I', or by any other convenient means.
The clothes and water areintroduced through the openings F, and the clothes are cleansed by the rapid revolution of the box A. The internal ribs B so confine the clothes that they are raised with the revolutions of the box A, and fall through the water. The ribs also increase the friction, and thereby assist in cleansing the clothes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
A washing-machine consisting of a revolving cubieal box, A, with internal ribs B, placed on each face of the cube, the middle one diagonal and the others parallel therewith, closed by a door, F', when constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
In testi mon y whereoI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. L. WITSIL.
